Many people suffer from memory loss as they get older.

But if it starts to happen on a regular basis,

it could be the early signs of dementia.

Printed by Williams Lea for the Department of Health.

Karen’s mum, Pauline, 68, was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 2000 but was experiencing symptoms for some years beforehand.

“I knew something wasn’t quite right but a name hadn’t been put on it. I think I was in denial so it was really quite shocking when I found out my mother had dementia. However, receiving a diagnosis meant we could approach the Alzheimer’s Society and access the help and support on offer. If I’d raised my concerns about mum’s health earlier we could have received a lot more support sooner and been better prepared for how the condition would affect her. Having that first difficult conversation with someone close to you about dementia is hard, but it’s the first step towards receiving help and enables everyone involved to plan for the future.”

What is dementia?

Dementia is not a single illness but a group of symptoms caused by damage to the brain. The symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes and confusion.

Dementia is caused by a number of diseases of the brain, the most common of which is Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia is the second most common cause. High blood pressure, heart

problems, high cholesterol and diabetes can increase the chances of developing vascular dementia so it’s important that these

conditions are identified and treated at the earliest opportunity.

What signs should I look for?

The following signs could be the early symptoms of dementia.

Struggling to remember recent events, but easily recalling things that happened in the past.

Forgetting the names of friends or everyday objects.

Repeating things or losing the thread of what’s being said.

Struggling to follow conversations or programmes on TV.

Having problems thinking or reasoning.

Feeling confused even when in a familiar environment.

If you’re worried someone close to you may have dementia, it’s important you talk to them about it as soon as possible.

How to approach the conversation.

We know it’s a tough conversation, so here are some tips on how you can raise the subject.

Be a good listener; ask if anything is worrying them.

When someone displays symptoms, take the opportunity to raise the subject with them.

Be honest and direct; suggest they visit the doctor to have their symptoms checked.

You do not have to mention dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Remember, visiting the doctor to get a proper diagnosis is important. Although there is currently no cure for dementia, with treatment and support many people who have the condition are able to lead active fulfilling lives.
