Rationale
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tract are rare malignancieswith a heterogeneous clinical behavior. For low-grade resectable tumors radical surgery represents the best
bet. Type I gastric NETs are mostly followed up and the distinction between Type I Gastric NETs and other types
is fundamental since they are mostly followed up without any treatment. Rectal NENs are special in that so many
are benign and those that are not are often higher grade and can behave badly. Chemo-radiotherapy might be
considered for high-grade tumors as single treatment.
The management of metastatic GEP-NENs to the liver is a matter of debate, where liver transplantation has been
proposed as well as other treatments to achieve long-term survival.
Due to these features and lack of absolute evidence GEP NET patients should be managed within
multidisciplinary dedicated teams of referral centers.
This workshop is focused on the interaction between clinicians and surgeons from NET referral centers
in three different clinical settings: Gastric NENs, Liver metastases management, Rectal NENs.
