Description
Over 20 years ago, Rasmussen and Vincente launched a revolution in cognitive ergonomics based in part on their work and experience in the nuclear power industry (Rasmussen, 1983; Vicente and Rasmussen, 1992). Their initial work
addressed issues in supervisory control and human errors that later broadened to widely used concepts such as cognitive systems engineering (1994) and cognitive work analysis (Vicente, 1995). In the years since their research investigations in the power industry, the state of process control technologies within power plants have improved dramatically while human information processing capabilities have remained the same.
This special issue will examine recent research and development on the performance of human operators interacting with
process control applications in the large process industries.
Topics
Topics of interests and relevance include, but are not limited to:
• Interface design for process control applications
• Visualization for supervisory control and operations activity
• Alarm system design and operator performance
• Adaptive procedures for dynamic processes
