During the last years in Italy an increase of the number of parrots, both as breeding and as pet birds, has been observed with a consequent increase of avian veterinarians. A large number of studies deal with viral and bacterial diseases of parrots but there is a lack of information on the parasitic diseases of these birds, specially in Italy. For this reason in the present study a survey on the endo-and ecto-parasites of 517 parrots belonging to 46 different species and coming from several Italian regions (Tuscany, Latium, Apulia, Veneto, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Friuli) was conducted.
In the case of alive animals, for the search of endo-parasites faecal samples were examined by flotation test, using both low and high density solutions, and by preparing stained faecal smears. For the search of ecto-parasites, the feathers and the skin were examined; isolated arthropods were fixed in Alcool 80°, mounted by using the Hoyer medium and microscopically examined after about a week. From dead birds parasites were isolated and identified.
Protozoa (Cryptosporidium baileyi), gastrointestinal nematodes, lice (Afrimenopon
waar), feather mites (Sideroferus lunula, Dubininia melopsittaci, Nymphicilichus perezae), hematophagous mites (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) and house dust mites
