Roberto Sani (Rome 1958) is full professor of History od Education at the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism at the University of Macerata.
Coordinator of the PhD Board of «Theory and History of Education» (Macerata University), he is director of «Center of Study and Research on the history of University of Macerata» and member of the Steering Committee of the «Centre of Documentation and Research on the history of the textbook and children's literature» of the same University.
Promoter and editor of the international journal «History of Education & Children's Literature», he is also member of the International Board of «Centro Internacional de la Cultura Escolar»
(CEINCE) of Berlanga de Duero (Spain), and member of the Scientific Board of the international journals «CCC - China Children's Culture» (Children's Culture Institute of the Zhejiang Normal University - China) and «Educaciò i Història. Revista d'Historia de l'Educaciò» (Societat d'Història de l'Educaciaò dels Paisos de Llengua Catalana - Barcelona, Spain).
Coordinator of many national and European projects, he has published many important studies in the field of modern and contemporary education history and scholastic institution and policy history.

CURRENT POSITION:
Full professor of History of education at the Department of Education, Tourism and Cultural Heritage at the University of Macerata.
Coordinator of several Italian and European research groups and projects in the fields of modern and contemporary history of education, of schooling and educational policy.
ACADEMIC CAREER:
-1981: He graduated in Pedagogy at “La Sapienza” University of Rome – grade 110/110 cum laude – thesis coordinated by Prof. Pietro Scoppola and entitled “«La Civiltà Cattolica» e la politica italiana dalla ricostruzione al centro-sinistra”.
-Researcher in the Department of Historical Sciences of “La Sapienza” University of Rome, under the supervision of Prof. Pietro Scoppola.
-Researcher in the Department of Education of the Catholic University of Milan, under the supervision of Prof. Luciano Pazzaglia.
- Research and studies were carried out in French, Belgian and Spanish Universities.
-1982: winner of state qualification test for the profession of High School teacher of Philosophy and Sciences of Education.
-1984-1988: teacher of History and Human Sciences at the «Vittorio Bachelet» High School of Rome.
-1988-92: Fellow researcher in the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the Catholic University of Milan.
-1992-95: Associated Professor of History of school and educational institutions in the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Genoa.
-1995-2000: Associate Professor of History of education in the Faculty of Sciences of Education in the Catholic University of Milan.
-2000: Appointe Full Professor of History of education in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Macerata.
-2002-02: Director of the Teacher Training School (Secondary-School) (Universities of Ancona, Camerino, Macerata and Urbino).
-2001-03: Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of Macerata University.

From 1 November 2003 to 31 October 2010, finally, prof. Roberto Sani was Rector of the University of Macerata.
On 20 October 2004, the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi gave to prof. Roberto Sani the honor of «Grande Ufficiale al Merito della Repubblica Italiana».
RESEARCH FIELDS:
a) role of male and female teaching religious institutes in the spread of popular education and educational institutions between XIX and XX centuries;
b) educational and cultural processes promoted by Society of Jesus during the missionary experience of XVI and XVII centuries;
c) evolution of family and family education in modern and contemporary Europe;
e) school publishing and textbooks in Italy during Liberal period and Fascist era;
f) role played by school and popular education in the process of national identity building after unification and in the promotion of constitutional and democratic values in Republican Italy.
g) origins and early development of special education, with particular attention to deaf education, in Italy and Europe in XVIII and XIX centuries.
