In  October,  students  of  Italian  received  a  rare  opportunity  to  attend  a  poetry  reading  at  UVA  with  Elisa  Biagini.  Biagini  studied  and  taught   Italian  language  and  literature  at  Rutgers  University  before  returning  to  her  native  Florence,  where  she  now  works  and  lives.  Today,  she  is   one  of  the  most  influential  young  poets  in  Italy.  On  October  24th,  she  read  and  discussed  excerpts  from  her  collections  The  Guest     /¶RVSLWH  and  In  the  Wood  (Nel  bosco)  before  an  audience  of  students,  professors,  and  Italophiles  from  throughout  Charlottesville.    We   were  quite  honored  to  host  her,  and  must  credit  Prof.  Enrico  Cesaretti  with  organizing  her  visit.    For  more  information  about  Elisa  Biagini,   please  visit  her  website:  http://www.elisabiagini.it/online/.      -The  Editors

In  October  15  lucky  Italian  students  were  able  to  try  the  real  thing:

la  pizza  napoletana  autentica,  crafted  and  baked  by  Albemarle   local  Sharlene  McNeish,  in  her  artisan-built  wood-fired  oven.    Shar-

lene  is  a  certified  Neapolitan  pizzaiuola.  This  means  that  she's  has   the  official  credentials  and  has  learned  the  steps  and  precise  ingre-

dients  for  making  true  Neapolitan  pizza.    A  group  of  us  visited  her   home  on  a  beautiful  autumn  day  to  learn  how  the  delicious  treat  is   made,  and  try  several  varieties.    We  feasted  on  pizzas  topped  with

sugo  di  pomodoro  and  mozzarel-

la  di  bufala,  and  then  enhanced   with  everything  from  prosciutto  to   funghi,  from  olives  to  truffle  oil!

Pizza  played  a  starring  role  even   when  it  came  time  for  il  dolce:

our  expert  pizzaiuola  prepared   stuffed  pizzas,  fat  with  Nutella,   banana  slices,  strawberries,   chocolate  sauce  and  whipped   cream!    Squisita!!
