Abstract
This dissertation analyzes students' perceptions of academic discourse, in particular on its written genres.
The purpose of this study is to see how students perceive genre and academic writing; in particular, what feeling they have towards academic dicourse. As a matter of fact, students are criticized for their scarce writing abilities, but the problem could be not grammatical, rather more social and linked to the concept of discourse as a social practice.
In order to achieve this aim, a group of twelve students from six different disciplines has been submitted to a face-to-face interview with nine questions.
The dissertation has been divided into three chapters. The first one explores three different approaches to writing: as text/product, as process and as social practice, with a deepening on the notions of genre. The second chapter focuses on the academic discourse and its definition;
furthermore, it explopres some studies conducted in the field. There is a reference to the notion of intertextuality. The third chapter represents the focus of the research: at first, it shows the methodology and the objects of research; afterwards students' answers have been commented and analyzed.
The obtained resuls show that there is a certain degree of confusion around the notions of genre, academic discourse and citations; a sense of exclusion from the community have been noticed among students; moreover, the results showed some contrasting feelings of resistance and accommodation to the values and behaviours of the academic community.
During this study, it has been noticed that it should be interesting to deepen this type of research on the field, in order to develop further results about the students' perceptions.
Il presente elaborato analizza le percezioni degli studenti universitari in merito al genere e al discorso accademico, in particolare sulla scrittura.
L'obiettivo di questa ricerca è quello di vedere come gli studenti perceptiscono il genere e la scrittura accademica, in particolare con quali sentimenti essi affrontano le convenzioni e i vincoli del discorso accademico. Infatti, gli studenti universitari sono criticati dai docenti per le loro scarse competenze linguistiche; la domanda a cui questo elaborato tenta di rispondere se, piuttosto di problemi meramente grammaticali, il problema non sia più legato alla loro percezione di discorso come pratica sociale.
Al fine di rispondere a queste domande, un gruppo di dodici studenti provenienti da sei diversi dipartimenti è stato sottoposto a un'intervista di nove domande.
Il lavoro è stato suddiviso in tre capitoli. Il primo capitolo analizza tre diversi approcci alla scrittura:
come testo, come processo e come pratica sociale, con un approfondimento sulla nozione di genere.
Il secondo capitolo esplora le nozioni di discorso accademico e comunità accademica; inoltre vengono presentati alcuni studi condotti sull'argomento. Il terzo capitolo rappresenta il focus centrale dell'elaborato, poiché vengono presentati i soggetti della ricerca e la metodologia utilizzata;
infine, le risposte degli studenti sono state commentate e analizzate.
I risultati raggiunti rivelano una serie di percezioni diverse. Innanzitutto, è stata rilevata una certa confusione per quanto riguarda le nozioni di genre, discorso accademico e citazioni; inoltre, vi è un sentimento di esclusione degli studenti verso la comunità accademica; in ultimo, è emersa la presenza di sentimenti contrastanti, ovvero resistenza alla comunità e tentativi di conformarsi ad essa.
A partire da questi risultati, sarebbe interessante sviluppare maggiormente questo tipo di ricerca per avere ulteriori e più approfonditi risultati sulle percezioni degli studenti.
Abstract
Le présent mémoire analyse les perceptions des étudiants sur le genre et sur le discours académique;
en particulier, l'étude se concentre sur l'écriture.
L'objectif de cette analyse est ce de voir comment les étudiants perçoivent le genre et l'écriture académique, en particulier de quelle façon ils affrontent les conventions de l'écriture academique.
En effet, les étudiants sont souvent critiqués à cause de leur inaptitude écrire. La question à laquelle ce mémoire essaye de répondre est si les problèmes d'écriture sont causés par la perception des étudiants sur le discours académique.
Afin de répondre à cette question, un groupe de douze étudiants de six disciplines différentes a été soumis à un entretien de neuf questions.
Le mémoire à été divisé en trois chapitres. Le premier chapitre est concentré sur trois approches à l'écriture: comme texte, comme procédé et comme pratique sociale, avec un approfondissement de la notion de genre. Le deuxieme montre le notions de discours et communauté académiques; dans ce chapitre ont été abordés des études sur le sujet. Le troisième chapitre répresente le coeur de la recherche; il présente les sujets de l'entretien et la méthodologie de travail; enfin, les réponses des étudiants ont été commenté et analysées.
Les résultats atteints denotent plusieurs perceptions comme une certaine incompréhension des notions de genre, discours et citation. En outre, les étudiants se sentent exclus par la communauté académique. Le dernier résultat est la présence de deux sentiments opposés: d' une part, la résistance aux valeurs académiques, de l'autre part le désir d'y participer en qualité de membres.
De ces résultats, il serait possible de faire des études plus approfondies sur le sujet pour développer plus de résultats sur les perceptions des étudiants.
