3.8. Ricerca sulle potenzialità dal punto di vista della domanda

Alfine di poter valutare l’interesse potenziale da parte del mercato verso un futuro utilizzo culturale, divulgativo e turistico di queste infrastrutture militari, è stata svolta una ricerca su quanto viene attualmente offerto e sulle potenzialità legate alla Regione del San Gottardo. Da una sommaria ricerca su Internet, emerge che “tour” legati alla storia militare e alla visita di fortezze, fortificazioni, cimiteri di guerra o altri punti di interesse particolari, vengono promossi da una moltitudine di tour operator, soprattutto in Gran Bretagna, Germania, Vietnam e Stati Uniti. La maggior parte di questi tour sono legati alle guerre napoleoniche, alla prima e seconda guerra mondiale (o, nel caso del Vietnam, ovviamente agli anni di quel particolare conflitto) e offrono la riscoperta di luoghi storici in cui si sono succeduti particolari avvenimenti (es. battaglie, sbarco in Normandia, ecc).

Questi tour comprendono anche visite guidate a infrastrutture un tempo adibite a scopi militari, visite a musei, cimiteri militari, ecc.

Quale esempio, e per dimostrare il notevole interesse e la domanda legati a questi prodotti, riportiamo l’elenco dei tour-operator inglesi che offrono dei pacchetti e tour specializzati in questo settore¹⁷, guidati da esperti che hanno una relazione diretta con quegli avvenimenti oppure da storici o ancora da collaboratori specializzati degli enti turistici.

- Anglia Battlefield Tours: Schools & groups battlefield tours to Europe. A range of different tours covering different conflicts, including poetry tours to WWI sites such as the Somme & Ypres studying the works of Siegfried Sasson and Wifred Owen.

- Bartletts Battlefield Journeys: specialised in WW1 battlefield sites in France and Belgium, but they also covered the 60th anniversary of the WW2 Normandy Landings in 1944.

- Battlefield Tours: Operating name for the War Research Society which specialises in taking pilgrims, veterans, widows and children to visit the battlefields, memorials and last resting places of the fallen, combined with guided historical tours of the areas of the First and Second World Wars in Northern France, Belgium, and Italy.

- Cooper's Waterloo Tours: Tours led by expert, Graham Cooper, to Napoleonic battlefield sites across Europe (his speciality), and also WW1 and WW2 (Normandy) battlefield sites.

- Dr Thomson's Tours: Small-scale (one-man) tour operator. Dr Thompson is a historian & guide based in Canterbury, he takes private tours to battlefield and historic sites on both sides of the Channel Tunnel, ie. Kent & Sussex (castles, gardens, history), Northern France & Belgium (WWII & WWII) battlefield sites. In 2004 he has two 'space & rocketry' coach tours going to Peenemunde, Berlin, the European Space Technology Centre (ESTEC) at Noordwijk, and the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) at Darmstadt.

- European Military Tours: Small group tours to WW1 & WW2 sites in Europe for American, Australian, British, Canadian and other Commonwealth Forces and Families, Friends, History Buffs etc. Part of Ipswich-based Destinations Europe.

- Flanders Tours: WWI (mostly) and WWII battlefield tours and remembrance visits.

- Galina International Battlefield Tours: Battlefield tours in Europe focused on WWI & WWII but also Agincourt & Waterloo.

- Holts Battlefield Tours: Well-established (25 years) operator, and probably the best known, specialising in history & battlefield tours with expert guides. A huge range of expert-guided battlefield tours worldwide.

- Leger: Small programme of 1st & 2nd WW battlefield tours in Europe.

- Lindum Heritage: small programme of history short breaks and day tours in the UK of which their Runways to War tour is hugely popular, visiting five WW 2 Bomber Command bases in East Anglia including the home of the legendary Dambusters squadron, and a chance to get inside a Lancaster bomber.

- Matt Limb Battlefield Tours: Matt Limb OBE is himself a Commanding Officer of a specialist Territorial Army regiment. He takes battlefield tours to 1st &

2nd WW sites on the Continent.

- Midas Tours: Longstanding specialist with a wide range of battlefield tours throughtout Europe and further afield, now incorporated into Holts (see above).

- Middlebrook Hodgson Battlefield Tours: Small group tours to 1st World War sites

- Old Country Tours: Anglo-American specialist tour operator offering history and battlefield tours in Europe and the USA.

- Perception Travel: Tour planners/organisers for visiting the WW2 Normandy landing sites. They also operate air tours of the area by private light aircraft.

- Richardson & Gray: Specialise in group tours to WWI & WWII battlefield sites, also for visiting American, Australian and Canadian groups.

- Skylark Battlefield Tours: WWI & WWII battlefield tours for colleges, schools and small private groups. They also offer 'Living History' presentations to school classes in the UK.

- Remembrance Travel: Remembrance is the Royal British Legion's specialist agency operating two kinds of tours: pilgrimages to cemeteries, memorials and war graves in Europe, Africa and the Far East, and battlefield tours to Europe and South Africa (Boer War sites). They have also been calling themselves 'Poppy Travel' in 2007, though the Remembrance name stays on their website.

- Reveille Battlefield Tours: Owner-led, in-depth small group visits by minibus to major sites of WW1 and WW2 - Somme Battlefield Tours: Expert-led and self-drive tours of the Somme & Ypres WWI battlefields.

- Spider Holidays: Small programme of mainly WWI & II battle site tours in Europe but also a Waterloo tour and Falklands war tour.

- Tours with Experts : Wide range of battlefield tours with experts in Europe Africa & the USA.

- Travel & Learn: Guided battlefield tours for schools. Travel and Learn is The Royal British Legion’s specialist organiser of visits for schools to battlefields and war cemeteries in many parts of the world, currently their programme features Ypres, The Somme, Normandy, Arnhem, Monte Casino and Berlin.

- Waterloo Battlefield Tours: Specialist guided tours to Waterloo.

Nessuno di questi operatori include finora programmi legati alla Svizzera e/o al ridotto alpino.

Alcune offerte sono legate alla “ricostruzione” e “messa in scena” di attività militari e offrono al visitatore la possibilità di vivere un’esperienza legata a simulazioni di battaglie o vita da soldato. Questi tour possono variare da visite giornaliere a tour settimanali e avvengono principalmente nel periodo autunnale ma anche in estate e in primavera. Luoghi di attrazione attorno alla regione del Passo del San Gottardo non mancano e il potenziale dal punto di vista della domanda neppure. Vanno incentivate visite guidate a infrastrutture militari, musei e luoghi legati ad avvenimenti particolari. Questi aspetti verranno ampliati nei prossimi capitoli.
