IL LIMITE
Per la definizione stessa di funzione, per ogni valore reale della variabile indipendente( x ) , vi è sempre uno ed un solo corrispondente valore reale della variabile dipendente ( y ). Quindi saremo sempre in grado di valutare il reale valore della funzione per tutti quei valori reali che assume la variabile indipendente (x) . Poiché abbiamo ricordato che intercorre una corrispondenza tra ogni valore reale ( x ) ed ogni punto sull'asse corrispondente delle ascisse , saremo sempre in grado di valutare il valore che assume una funzione per ogni punto nel quale essa sia definita.
E' del tutto evidente che ci si possa chiedere quale sia il comportamento che assume una funzione in corrispondenza di punti in cui non sia definita ; ed è per tale motivo che introduciamo il
concetto di limite .
Il problema quindi sta nel valutare che tipo di comportamento assume la funzione , man mano che alla variabile indipendente x diamo dei valori molto prossimi al valore per il quale la funzione stessa non è definita. A tale proposito faremo un esempio chiarificatore.
Es.
Campo di esistenza : ∀ ∈ ℜx /(x=2)
Ecco quindi che diventa interessante valutare che cosa succede per la funzione y quando la variabile
x assume dei valori molto prossimi a 2 , sia a partire da sinistra che a partire da destra.

Possiamo quindi verificare che quanto più ci si avvicina al valore x = 2 da sinistra ( 1^ tabella ), tanto più la funzione assume valori negativi infinitamente piccoli , e che per tale ragione ,
rappresentati con il simbolo (−∞) ; allo stesso modo per la 2^ tabella i valori che la funzione assume al tendere di x a 2+ ( è così che indicheremo i valori che si avvicinano a 2 da
destra ) sono valori positivi infinitamente grandi e rappresentabili quindi con (+∞).
Vi sono altresì altri valori sull'asse delle ascisse dove la funzione non è valutabile , e precisamente i valori corrispondenti agli estremi di tale asse che indicheremo con i simboli (−∞ +∞) (, ).
Quindi il numero dei limiti da calcolare per una funzione sarà stabilito dagli estremi del Campo di esistenza

= − + → x xCosì come abbiamo formulato una tabella per i valori di x molto prossimi a 2 , così ora possiamo formulare una tabella assegnando a x dei valori che si allontanano sempre più verso valori negativi infinitamente piccoli e verso valori positivi infinitamente grandi.
Ci rendiamo conto del fatto che più la variabile x assume valori elevati ( sia negativi che positivi ), più la variabile y ( che rappresenta la funzione) assume dei valori molto vicini allo zero
(leggermente negativi o leggermente positivi ).
Tali indicazioni derivantici dalle tabelle formulate ci indicano il comportamento della funzione per valori di x non definiti come valori reali.

Usando una terminologia non del tutto corretta , diremo che l'operazione di studio del limite ci permette di determinare dei punti astratti ( non appartenenti al campo reale, e quindi non definiti) che fungono da punti di collegamento per il grafico della funzione .
Ritornando all'esempio sopra riportato:

Dopo aver quindi spiegato il significato pratico di ciò che vuol dire studiare il limite di una funzione, tratteremo ora la parte del calcolo vero e proprio del limite di una funzione.
Distingueremo quindi i limiti in due tipologie ben differenziate :
LIMITI DI FORMA IMMEDIATA

LIMITI DI FORMA INDETERMINATA
I limiti di forma indeterminata sono tutti quei limiti per i quali , al contrario dei precedenti , non si ottiene immediatamente il risultato.
Le forme cosiddette di indeterminazione sono le seguenti : ( generalmente riferite alla funzione)
Esaminiamo quindi i casi più frequenti che si possono verificare :

Nella maggior parte dei casi , poiché vi è un rapporto fra una funzione algebrica e una trascendente , è necessario risolvere il limite con il teorema di l’Hospital ; se le funzioni sono della stessa natura ( algebriche o trascendenti ) si possono riapplicare i metodi esposti in precedenza o più opportunamente procedere secondo le relative proprietà algebriche .
