momen-The object of this thesis is the study of a tower building located in the city of Mantua. The buil-ding in question is the Torre dello Zuccaro, loca-ted near Piazza Sordello, between Via Rubens and Via Tazzoli. The choice to study a historic tower is understandable since the spread of this type of building in the Italian territory is very wide, including bell towers set against churches, towers of medieval origin and defensive use in the presence of city walls (in some cases modi-fied for become living towers) and from the mid-1800s in the form of chimneys. The shape that characterizes, the high height and slenderness, as seen with the last seismic events that hit the Italian territory, highlights the vulnerability of the towers also because they are built to withstand vertical thrusts on their own and not of horizontal origin like those that serve seismic events.

In the following chapters, the topic concerning the structural fragility of tower buildings will be discussed with the support of research and analysis already carried out both on the tower highlighted in this study, and in the investiga-tions carried out on other buildings with a similar structure in the Italian context.

The Zuccaro Tower investigation development process followed the indications provided by the Technical Standards for Construction with refe-rence to chapter 8 (Developed buildings) and more precisely to the D.P.C.M. 2011 which pro-vides guidelines for the protection of existing hi-storical buildings. An initial phase is spent in loco concerning the geometric survey and the inter-nal and exterinter-nal framework. The surveys carried out by ISMES in 1990 were compared with the current situation. The set of information gathered has the possibility of evaluating the confidence factor that takes into account and summarizes the effect of uncertain modeling as it summari-zes in itself, in addition to the geometric survey, the material-constructive, mechanical and on-ground investigations and foundations. The fac-tor defined with FC was estimated equal to 1.18. In the final phase, a simple cantilever model has been developed to assess the vulnerability to ho-rizontal forces assuming it has affected collapse based on the combined stresses of compression and bending. The model provides for the division of the building into areas with uniform characteri-stics on which the security checks are based on each of them, addressing the seismic demand (the agent bending) with the seismic capacity (the final resistant moment).

to resistente finale).

The seismic model, although simplified, has been validated by comparison with experimental dynamic surveys.

2.1 DISTRIBUTION OF THE

BUIL-DINGS IN TORRE ON THE ITALIAN

TERRITORY

In Italy the territory is characterized by a massive presence of historical and monumental buildin-gs. This typology, as demonstrated by the recent earthquakes in L’Aquila (April 2009) (D’Ayala and Paganoni 2011) and Reggio Emilia (May 2012) (Fragonara et al. 2016), is extremely vul-nerable to seismic loads.

Furthermore, although the earthquake that struck L’Aquila was a seismic event of exceptio-nal violence in the Italian scenario, damage was frequently recorded, and in some cases, collap-ses, of monumental buildings or parts of them even after not extremely earthquakes violent. It is therefore evident the need for reliable test methods and analysis methodologies that can allow the quantification of the seismic risk fairly quickly and to be used with a certain repetitive-ness on a territorial scale; to provide these indi-cations we find the general guidelines to establi-sh the priority of intervention to protect historical monuments.

Among the different types of historical monu-mental buildings we find the majority of mason-ry towers, which represent a distinctive sign of many Italian cities and widely distributed in Euro-pe, embodying an important heritage to be pre-served. Their spread is extensive, as they are set against churches in the form of bell towers, in the Middle Ages as fortifications (subsequently modified as dwellings) and finally from the mid-800s in the form of chimneys both in Italy and in Europe. These structures, built to withstand only vertical loads, show unique typological and morphological characteristics, which have signi-ficant effects on their behavior with horizontal lo-ads: due to the high slenderness and mass the evaluation of their seismic risk is a significant concern. As demonstrated also by recent Italian earthquakes, the slenderness and the cutting area at the base are among the most important parameters that govern the response structure of the towers under seismic load. In the case of insulated masonry towers, damage is generally more severe at the base (as a result of a com-bination of bending and shear loads) although extensive cracks have been observed along the entire height of the building.

(11)

In some cases, vertical cutting cracks are obser-ved during strong earthquakes thus demonstra-ting the evolution of the damage during a dyna-mic excitation plays a crucial role in reducing the resistance to the geometry of the structure, acti-vating higher modality vibrations and reducing the rigidity of the cross section.

These aspects have been taken into considera-tion by Italian standards (NTC 2018), which en-visage the sensitivity of the territory to seismic risk and also introduces the use of non-linear analysis methods. Furthermore, an additional document, the Italian guidelines for the asses-sment and mitigation of seismic risk of cultural heritage “(DPCM 2011), proposes an analysis methodology based on three different levels of evaluation, according to a growing knowledge of the structure.

The first level of analysis (LV1, analysis on a terri-torial scale), through the simplified mechanics of models based on a limited number of geometric and material parameters (and qualitative tools such as visual inspections), allows the evalua-tion of the acceleraevalua-tion of the seismic collapse of the structure .

The second level of evaluation (LV2, local analy-sis) is based on a kinematic approach and analyzes the mechanisms of local collapse that can develop on different macro-elements. The knowledge of the structural details of the buil-ding (crack pattern, technical construction, con-nections between architectural elements, etc.) is necessary for the correct identification of the macro elements.

The last level of assessment (LV3, global analy-sis) requires a global analysis of the entire con-struction under seismic load to be performed using appropriate numerical codes. If compared with the previous two levels, LV3 should be the most accurate but, depending on the numerical approach used, requires a large amount of expe-rimental data, together with a high computational effort.

Furthermore, to make use of the argument exa-mined on the fragility of tower buildings, below is a list of historical towers studied through dyna-mic surveys and numerical modeling (tab.2.1.1)

2.2 PRINCIPALI DANNI

CAUSA-TI DAL TERREMOTO

DELL’AQUI-LA (2009) ED EMILIA ROMAGNA

(2012)

2.2 MAIN DAMAGES CAUSED BY

THE EARTHQUAKE DELL’AQUILA

(2009) AND EMILIA ROMAGNA

(2012)

The 2009 L’Aquila earthquake was characteri-zed by a series of seismic events that lasted from December 2008 and ended in 2012 (fig.2.2.1).

When we refer to this earthqua-ke we remember in particular the night of April 6th 2009 at 3:32 am where a quake with a magni-tude of 6.1 Mw (INGV, 2009), with a hypocen-ter located at a depth of about 8 km (INGV, 2009 ), unleashed all its power affecting in a variable way a lar-ge part of Central Italy. A catastrophe that cau-ght thousands of people sleeping on the ground razing houses, monuments, historic buildings, hospitals and universities. The balance sheet of this event was of 309 victims, 1600 wounded and abundant damage to the building. The earthqua-ke was felt in a vast area including Central Italy, the most affected region was Abruzzo, followed

(13)

by Lazio. At the first light of the morning the fol-lowing day L’Aquila was disfigured: several mo-numental and civil buildings collapsed, including the Student House and the Prefecture Palace. The area is concentrated on the Paganica - San Demetrio surface fault system and is about 20 km long with NW - SE direction. The most dama-ged countries were those built on paleo landsli-des, such as L’Aquila, on lake sediments formed by silts and sands dominated by conglomerates or on buried karst forms.

In the area of L’Aquila there were very different types and building conditions; along with historic stone buildings, usually not square, alluvial peb-bles of very irregular size with sporadic presence of brickwork, squared stone buildings, bricks or cement blocks coexisted, with floors and roofs in brick and cement, and villas or condominiums very recent in reinforced concrete, in addition to more or less important monumental buildings. The symbol of the L’Aquila earthquake is the tower of Santo Stefano, which collapsed under the earthquake (fig. 2.2.2 and fig. 2.2.3).

The second earthquake in analysis, with its epi-center in Finale Emilia (MO) and hypoepi-center at a depth of 7km, which occurred on May 20, 2012 at around 03.03 am with a magnitude of 5.8 MW (INGV, 2012), was a seismic event consisting of a series of earthquakes located in the seismic district of the Emilian Po valley, mainly in the provinces of Modena, Ferrara, Mantua, Reggio Emilia, Bologna and Rovigo.

In the area affected by the 2012 seismic se-quence, several strong earthquakes have occur-red over the years. In fact, historical documents (Guidoboni et al., 2018) record earthquakes with an estimated magnitude of 5.5 MW occurring

(14)

2.2.4) in occasione

near Ferrara in 1346, 1561 and 1570, while in the areas of Finale Emilia and Bondeno they occurred in 1574, 1639, 1761, 1908 and 1986. Other earthquakes occurred in Mantua in 1901. The earthquakes of May 20 and May 29, 2012 caused heavy damage to rural and industrial bu-ildings, water channeling works, as well as buil-dings and historical monuments and civil buildin-gs of old stone or pebbles.

The building symbol of this catastrophe was the clock tower, or tower of the Modenese of Finale Emilia that following the seismic event was first split in two (fig. 2.2.4) on the occasion of the first

earthquake on May 20, for then collapse defini-tively just a few hours later, with the afterglow of 15:18 of magnitude 5.1 Mw. The image of its clock broken in two has become one of the icons of the tragedy, going around the world. Incredi-bly, however, the ancient bell from 1770 remai-ned practically intact and was recovered from the rubble by the fire brigade.

2.3 STRUCTURE AND MATERIALS

THAT CHARACTERIZE TOWERS

AND BELLS

Masonry towers and bell towers represent a si-gnificant portion of the Italian building and mo-numental heritage. These have shown over the years a strong susceptibility to damage, or even to total or partial collapse, due to the seismic action, sometimes due to interventions and / or

(15)

modifications that do not respect the static and cultural integrity of the building.

Usually, when referring to these buildings, refe-rence is made to some specific factors such as the slenderness of the structure, the degree of clamping of the walls and the possible presen-ce of lower adjapresen-cent structures. This type of ar-chitecture is characterized by the development mainly in the vertical dimension, which is deci-dedly greater than those of the base. Slender-ness however is a variable parameter, in fact bell towers can be found as bastions of defense, even the masonry of these differs, for the former one speaks of a one-dimensional masonry while the latter are formed by imposing sack masonry. The plant usually has a square or rectangular shape, in some cases it may be circular. The cir-cular base towers were statically more reliable, but also less easy to construct due to the need to cut the blocks (the stones), level after level, with the inclined inner faces, like those of the arches. In the 13th century in the transalpine Europe the towers were built first with a semicircular base, then circular or octagonal. The type of fortified castle with semi-circular and then circular towers was called “Filipiano” (from Filippo Augusto). In the Italian area the round base towers developed in the princely, royal or pontifical castles starting from the fourteenth century, however, in many municipalities (later lords) of the central Italy, the circular towers were not particularly widespread. The materials that were used, as reported befo-re, can be both stone and masonry constructions formed by bricks and mortars, or bag walls.

3.1 INTRODUZIONE

Thanks to the 2018 Technical Regulations, with reference to chapter 8, existing constructions; and the DPCM 2011, with reference to the hi-storic buildings, summarized below, it is possible to carry out a verification of the structure in the event of a seismic event.

This chapter summarizes the steps of the Gui-delines that lead to the complete performance of the verification, with the three assessment le-vels: LV1, LV2 and LV3.

The path of knowledge, the fulcrum of the analy-sis, is vital to obtain an optimal value of the con-fidence factor below.

3.2 IDENTIFICAZIONE DELLA

CO-STRUZIONE

3.2 IDENTIFICATION OF THE

CON-STRUCTION

The first step for a good identification of the structure consists in a correct and complete as-sessment of the organism and in its localization in the territory, in order to identify the sensitivity of the factory towards the various risks and in particular of the seismic one.

This first phase also includes a first schematic survey of the building capable of describing its maximum consistency and the location of any valuable elements.

Furthermore, the relationship between the buil-ding and the surrounbuil-ding area and the characte-rization of the spatial and functional relationships between the building and any adjacent buildings must also be analyzed. The study of the fabric will have to allow us to hypothesize the con-structive hierarchy and the relationships betwe-en the building and the context.

In particular it will have to go back to the con-stituent building bodies, identifiable through the analysis of the visible elevations and the pla-no-altimetric articulation.

3.3 RILIEVO GEOMETRICO

3.3 GEOMETRIC SURVEY

The knowledge of the structural geometry of existing masonry organisms derives from signi-ficant operations. The survey will have to refer both to the overall geometry of the organism and

(18)

to that of the constituent elements, including the relationships with any buildings in adherence. The description of the factory involves the iden-tification of the plano-altimetric characteristics of the constituent elements, therefore, at each le-vel, the geometry of all the masonry elements, the vaults (thickness and profile), the floors and the roof (type and warping), of the staircases (structural typology), the location of the possible niches, cavities, openings closed (with what mo-dality), chimneys, included foreign elements and the typology of the foundations.

The representation of the results of the survey will be carried out through plans, elevations and sections.

Once this operation is completed, we will proce-ed, within the overall geometric survey, to identi-fy the resistant structural scheme.

Since the geometric survey can be finalized to define the geometry of the model to be used in the seismic analysis it is advisable to verify that all the necessary information has been detected. Furthermore, the masses of the elements and the loads weighing on each wall element must be fully determinable.

The difficulties of the geometric relief are linked to the accessibility of some spaces, such as atti-cs, volumes between false vaults or false ceilings and coverings, or to the excessive height of the elements to be measured, as in the case of bell towers, towers, vaults in a nave, etc. .; however, tools are available that allow rapid survey and accurate restitution even in the case of complex elements, and direct investigation techniques (endoscopy fig. 3.3.1) or indirect (thermography fig. 3.3.2, georadar fig. 3.3.3 , etc.) for

inacces-sible spaces.

Should be detected and represented the possi-ble crack pattern, in such a way as to allow the identification of the causes and possible evolu-tions of the structural problems of the organism. The lesions will be classified according to their geometry (extension, width) and their kinematics (detachment, rotation, sliding, displacement out of the plane). In a similar way the deformations will be classified according to their nature (ob-vious out of plumb, sagging, bulging, bulging, vaulting, etc.) and associated, if possible, with the respective damage mechanisms.

3.4 ANALISI STORICA DEGLI

EVEN-TI E INTERVENEVEN-TI SUBIEVEN-TI

signifi-3.4 HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF

EVENTS AND SUFFERED

INTER-VENTIONS

For the purposes of a correct identification of the resistant system and its state of stress, it is important to reconstruct the entire construction history of the protected cultural heritage. In par-ticular, the realization sequence of the different portions of factory will have to be highlighted, in order to identify the areas of possible discontinu-ity and material inhomogenediscontinu-ity, both in plan and in elevation (added bodies, elevations, substitu-tions of horizontal, etc.).

The history of the building can also be used as one of the tools for controlling and verifying the building’s response to particular natural or an-thropic events and any consequent transforma-tions. Therefore, the events suffered, especially

(20)

the most significant and traumatic ones, and the corresponding effects, verifiable by documen-tary means or through a direct analytical survey of the building, must be identified. The history of the use of the asset can also provide indications on the actions applied in the past.

Knowledge of the response of the building to a particular traumatic event may allow us to iden-tify a qualitative model of behavior, even if the changes that occurred in the construction must be kept in mind, in particular precisely following that event.

In order to understand the current behavior and to define any seismic improvement interventions, it is important to identify the nature of the conso-lidation interventions already carried out in the past, their location and the structural elements involved, the period of construction and the veri-fication of their effectiveness. in time.

3.5 THE CONSTRUCTION

MA-TERIAL SURVEY AND STATE OF

CONSERVATION

The construction material relief must make it possible to completely identify the resistant or-ganism of the factory, also bearing in mind the quality and state of preservation of the materials and constituent elements.

This recognition requires the acquisition of in-formation carried out thanks to indirect non-de-structive investigative techniques (thermo-graphy, georadar, sonic tomography fig. 3.5.1,

etc.) or weakly destructive direct inspections (endo-scopy, plaster removal, es-says, small break-in, etc.). A relevant aspect is the choice of the number, type and location of the tests to be performed. For a correct knowledge they should be adopted in a widespread way, but for their possible impact and for economic reasons, they will be used only if they are useful in the evaluation and in the project of the intervention. In order to mi-nimize the impact of these investigations, it is essential to have an in-depth awareness of the

(21)

• Tipologia della muratura;

• Qualità del collegamento tra pareti;

• Qualità del collegamento tra orizzontamen-ti e pareorizzontamen-ti;

construction characteristics of the artefacts in the area and in different historical periods, so as to be able to resort to characteristics inferable from the rule of art.

Special attention must be paid to the evaluation of wall quality, including the geometric and mate-rial characteristics of the individual components, as well as the assembly methods.

The reading of a structural scheme of operation of the factory requires a knowledge of the con-struction details and the connection characteri-stics between the different elements:

• Type of masonry;

• Quality of the connection between walls; • Quality of the connection between horizontal

and walls;

• Type of horizontal sections (floors, vaults, ro-ofs), with particular reference to their rigidity in the plane.

3.6 MATERIALS

MECHANICAL

CHARACTERIZATION

The visual relief and some investigations can al-low to reach a good knowledge and a judgment on the quality of the materials and their degra-dation. However, in some cases the modeling of the structural behavior, especially with regard to the seismic action, requires the knowledge of mechanical parameters of deformability and re-sistance of the materials, and in particular of the masonry.

Non-destructive diagnostic techniques of an in-direct type, such as sonic and ultrasonic tests, allow us to evaluate the homogeneity of mecha-nical parameters in the different parts of the con-struction, but they do not provide reliable quan-titative estimates of their values, as they are derived from the measurement of other quanti-ties ( for example, the speed of propagation of volume waves).

The direct measurement of the mechanical para-meters of the masonry, in particular those of re-sistance, cannot be performed, therefore, except through weakly destructive or destructive tests, even if on limited portions.

(22)

successivamente analizzati in laboratorio.

1. almanacchi delle diverse tipologie murarie presenti, nel corso del tempo, nell’area in esame;

(mortar, bricks) can be performed on site or on small samples, taken and subsequently analy-zed in the laboratory. As far as mortars are con-cerned, sclerometric and penetrometric tests and chemical analyzes can be performed on samples taken at depth so as not to be subject to surface degradation. On bricks, in addition to determi-ning their physical characteristics, it is possible to evaluate the elastic modulus and tensile and compressive strengths through mechanical tests in the laboratory, compression and bending. The mechanical characteristics of the masonry can be deduced from the properties of the con-stituent elements only in the case of masonry made of bricks or natural squared elements with a regular texture.

The identification of mechanical characteristi-cs can also be obtained by analogy with similar masonry, taking into account, as far as possible, also degradation phenomena. To this end it is desirable that the territorial protection and con-trol bodies establish permanent archives contai-ning:

almanacs of the different wall types present, over time, in the area in question;

tables with reference values of mechanical pro-perties, derived from experiments organized by the same bodies and / or using campaigns per-formed for single interventions and studies. The data acquired in the survey campaign will be returned in such a way as to allow, in a relatively short time, the creation of a database accessible through the program for monitoring the conser-vation status of the protected architectural as-sets.

3.7 LEVELS OF KNOWLEDGE AND

CONFIDENTIAL FACTORS

Once the construction has been identified, in re-lation to the deepening of the geometrical sur-vey and of the material-construction, mechanical and soil and foundation investigations, the desi-gner assumes a confidence factor FC (tab. 3.7.1),

between 1 and 1.35, which makes it possible to graduate the reliability of the structural analysis model and the evaluation of the seismic safety

(23)

• Modelli che considerano la deformabi-lità e la resistenza dei materiali e degli elementi strutturali;

mu-index.

The confidence factor is applied differently de-pending on the models for the evaluation of sei-smic safety that can be classified as follows: • Models that consider the deformability and

strength of materials and structural elements; • Models that consider the limit equilibrium of

the different elements of the construction, thinking the masonry material as rigid and not resistant to traction (creation of a kine-matic mechanism of rigid blocks, through the introduction of appropriate disconnections). In the first case the confidence factor is applied to the properties of the materials, reducing both the elastic modules and the resistances. The starting values of the mechanical characteristics to which to apply the confidence factor will be defined in the usual intervals of the construction practice of the time, based on the results of the material survey and construction details.

In the second case, that is of rigid body models, in which the resistance of the material is not ta-ken into account, the confidence factor is applied directly to the capacity of the structure, that is reducing the acceleration corresponding to the different limit states. If investigations are carried out on the mechanical properties of the masonry, for the partial confidence factor FC3 a lower value of 0.12 can be assumed only if the compressive strength of the masonry is considered in the eva-luation model.

In both cases, the definition of the confidence factor will refer to the material / type that most penalizes the specific damage / collapse mecha-nism under consideration.

By way of example, the confidence factor can be determined by defining different partial confiden-ce factors FCk (k = 1.4), based on the numerical coefficients shown in the table, whose values are associated with the four categories of inve-stigation and the level of detail in them reached:

The geometric survey must, in any case, be de-veloped at a level of detail consistent with the needs of the geometric model adopted in the analytical assessments and / or of the necessary qualitative considerations.

(24)

tabella 3.7.1

typology and warping of the floors, structure and filling of the vaults, etc.) and construction details (wall clampings, possible weakening, size and type of support of the horizontal sections, thrust containment devices, degradation of materials, etc.) will have to ensure, compatibly with the re-quirements of protecting the property, to ascer-tain the different types of construction present, their location and repeatability, with particular at-tention to all the aspects that can influence the triggering of local collapse mechanisms .

In the case of the presence of various structural materials, the level of detail and the consequent confidence factor FC3 may refer to the most in-fluential material or materials on the determina-tion of the safety index. In the case in which the seismic analysis is based on the separate eva-luation of different local mechanisms, knowledge levels and partial confidence factors relating to each modeled portion can be used.

In the case of local evaluations when the infor-mation on the terrain and the foundations have no relation on the specific collapse mechanism, the partial confidence factor FC4 can be assumed to be 0. In other cases, as regards the know-ledge of the terrain and of the foundations, we distinguish the aspects linked to the definition of the category of soil, involved in the definition of the seismic input, from those concerning the transmission of actions from the structure to the ground (geometry of the foundations and geote-chnical parameters of the foundational terrain). An example of literature regarding the importan-ce of the confidenimportan-ce factor is given by Bartoli’s

(25)

article (Bartoli et al., 2016) where he reports the study done on the Coppi-Campatelli tower in San Giminiano. The tower represents a typologi-cal example of the tower house, which appeared in San Gimignano during the 12th-13th century. Today the tower is incorporated into the archi-tectural complex of the homonymous palace. The Coppi-Campatelli Complex, included in the upper part of the eastern side of Via San Gio-vanni, near the ancient city walls, is composed of three distinct buildings; two other buildings have been added on the back façade along the slope of a hill of which they compensate the morpho-logy.

In Via San Giovanni it is possible to identify the following main parts of the Coppi-Campatelli complex (fig. 3.7.2): the Pisan-style

tower-hou-se with two archways (that is, vaulted

openin-gs initially introduced in the Italian city of Pisa), subsequently closed to form the current tower, the building on its right, still in the Pisan style, with a single vaulted arch, the main building to

torre è riportata in fig. 3.7.4.

l’altez-its left, consisting of a porch with four openings in stone blocks on the ground floor and with vau-lted ceilings in the basement. This model is ge-nerally characterized by the presence of a barrel vault (fornix) which extends over several floors between the two opposite facades. The high and narrow openings that pierce the basement were originally interspersed with one or more floors, often corresponding to external wooden balco-nies sometimes covered with roofs. The highest levels of the tower instead present rare small openings, similar to the more ancient or contem-porary towers.

A floor of the second level of the Coppi-Cam-patelli complex, including the tower profile, is shown in fig. 3.7.3, while a section of the tower

is shown in fig. 3.7.4.

The construction phases are identified with the following order of events:

Phase 1: Construction of the Pisan-style tower house, with double arch and pointed arches. This building, with a trapezoidal plan (fig. 3.7.3),

corresponds to the lower portion of the current Torre Campatelli-Coppi. It was built along the Via Francigena on a steep slope, with the main façade located on the highest point of the ridge, corresponding to street level. The construction of the eastern front took place at a height of about 3 m below street level.

Phase 2: corresponds to the tower-house, still in the Pisan style, with a single archway surmoun-ted by a poinsurmoun-ted arch, resting on the south side of the previous building (fig. 3.7.2).

Phase 3: raising of the original tower-house: the stone structure was built by developing above the original four-story building (the overall height of the tower above the road reached approxima-tely 27.6 m).

Step 4: finally, the creation of the cellar in the basement of the tower.

Compared to the geometric profile, the main di-mensions of the tower are as follows: at street level, the tower has a plan size of 6.60 m (in Via San Giovanni, to the west side); the length of the south side is about 7.80 m while the north side is about 8.30 m long (since the cross section is trapezoidal, fig. 3.7.3). The thickness of the

wal-ls is almost uniform, varying between 1.5 m at the base and 1.0 m at the top. The height of the tower compared to Via San Giovanni is about 27.60 m; on the opposite side, while the tower is built along the slope of a hill, the height is about

• la presenza nella sezione seminterrato delle

due fornici (lato ovest e est, fig. 3.7.3);

two arches (west and east side, fig. 3.7.5);

• the incorporation of the lower part of the tower, for about half of its height, into the aggregate structures that develop along Via San Giovanni.

Internally, the tower is divided into six levels (plus an underground level). The ground floor, the first floor and the second floor are made up of wooden elements. The third floor is formed by a barrel vault (probably the first intervention du-ring the raising of the tower). The fourth, fifth and sixth levels are just wooden walkways that provi-de access to the seventh level through a series of wooden stairs. The seventh level, the last one, is formed by a wooden floor that allows access to the roof.

The supporting walls are walls in multi-layered stone masonry with internal and external faces constructed with the same material and type of masonry. The inner core is composed of hete-rogeneous stone blocks linked by mortar. The inner and outer faces are made of cavernous limestone. Due to the lack of information (te-sts, core samples, mineralogical investigations, etc.), apart from visual inspection, the mechani-cal properties of the walls have been characte-rized taking into account the provisions of Ita-lian laws (NTC 2018). In particular, two different types of masonry walls were considered. The first frame of reference was that of uncut stone masonry with walls of limited thickness and filling core. The second pattern of dressed rectangular stone masonry. The ranges of mechanical refe-rence values proposed by the NTC (2018) were selected based on the mechanical characteristi-cs of the masonry existing in the Italian territory and refer to masonry with poor quality mortar. Considering that a limited level of knowledge had been reached, the Italian standard prescri-bes using the minimum values of the data ran-ges as resistance parameters (fm and s0), while the average values were assumed for the elastic modules (E and G), as reported in table 3.7.6.

Furthermore, as suggested by the Standards, and in the absence of more accurate investiga-tions, a correction factor of 0.80 was applied for the first type of masonry and 0.70 for the second to mechanical parameters.

This factor explains the presence of a thick inner core.
