" ( G i d d e n s 1 9 8 1 : 6 0 ) B u t G i d d e n s c o n f u s e s e x p a n s i o n of p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s "as s u c h " w i t h p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s w h i c h a r e d e t r i m e n t a l to t h e n a t u r a l e n v i r o n m e n t . T h i s m a y be a m e r e v e r b a l q u a r r e l . H o w e v e r , it s e e m s t h a t in h i s t e r m i n o l o g y , t h e e x p a n s i o n o f p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s l e a d s i n e v i t a b l y to a n " e x p l o i t a t i o n of n a t u r e " . W h i l e I t h i n k th a t n o t h i n g is w r o n g w i t h " e x p l o i t i n g n a t u r e " , t h e r e is c e r t a i n l y s o m e t h i n g w r o n g w i t h n a t u r e t r a n s f o r m a t i o n s w h i c h l e a d to w o r s e l i f e - c o n d i t i o n s of h u m a n b e i n g s . In o t h e r w o r d s , I t h i n k t h a t the " P r o m e t h e a n " a t t i t u d e is n o t o n l y d e f e n s i b l e , b u t a l s o s u p e r i o r to G i d d e n s ' s u g g e s t i o n t h a t M a r x s h o u l d h a v e e x t e n d e d h i s c o n c e r n to e x p l o i t a t i o n of n a t u r e . It is t r u e t h a t M a r x w e l c o m e d t h e g r o w t h of p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s a n d , w h a t is m o r e , p r a i s e d e v e n c a p i t a l i s m for d e v e l o p i n g the p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s in a h i t h e r t o u n k n o w n way. T h u s , at f i r s t s i g h t , i n d u s t r i a l i s m for h i m w a s p a r t of t h e h i s t o r i c a l t e n d e n c y of the p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s to d e v e l o p - a n i n d i s p e n s a b l e c o n d i t i o n for t h e a d v e n t of a c o m m u n i s t s o c i e t y . ( G o rz 1 9 7 6 : 1 5 9 ) But G o r z d o e s n o t s h a r e t h i s v i e w ; o n th e c o n t r a r y he t h i n k s t h a t m o d e r n s c i e n c e a n d t e c h n o l o g y a r e " i d e o l o g i c a l " in t h e s e n s e t h a t t h e y a r e s h a p e d in d e c i s i v e w a y s by c a p i t a l i s t i n t e r e s t s . I n d e e d , t h e r e a r e s e v e r a l a u t h o r s w h o d e n y t h a t t h e r e c a n e x i s t s o m e t h i n g l i k e " i n n o c e n t " p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s . A s w e s h a l l see, t h i s q u e s t i o n is a c r u c i a l o n e for M a r x ' s o w n a n a l y s i s . T h i s d i s c u s s i o n w i l l l e a d to t h e r e s u l t t ha t w e m u s t be a w a r e of a d o u b l e m e a n i n g of t he t e r m " g r o w t h of p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s " : it c a n m e a n (1) i n ­ c r e a s i n g m a s t e r y o v e r n a t u r e a n d (2) p r o d u c t i o n of w e a l t h ( m a t e ­ r i a l g o o d s ) w i t h e v e r d i m i n i s h i n g e f f o r t or in i n c r e a s i n g a b u n ­ d a n c e . If t h i s r e a s o n i n g is true, M a r x d o e s n o t e q u a t e i n c r e a s e s in e c o n o m i c e f f i c i e n c y w i t h a n i n c r e a s e of h u m a n m a s t e r y o v e r n a t u r e .

Bu t s o m e c r i t i c s of i n d u s t r i a l i s m g o o n e s t e p f u r t h e r : t h e y m a k e t h e b a s i c c l a i m that the d e v e l o p m e n t of p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s p e r se is i n c o m p a t i b l e w i t h the p r o s p e r i n g of n a t u r e . F r o m t h i s p r o p o s i ­ t i o n t h e y c o n c l u d e t h a t i n d u s t r i a l i s m s h o u l d be l i m i t e d (or e v e n a b o l i s h e d ) in the i n t e r e s t of n a t u r e a n d m a n k i n d . A l t h o u g h M a r x r a r e l y a d r e s s e d e c o l o g i c a l p r o b l e m s , t hi s m u c h is c l e a r : he s h a r p l y o p p o s e d s u c h p e s s i m i s m . I n s t e a d of a s s u m i n g the b a s i c i n c o m p a t a b i l t y of m o d e r n t e c h n o l o g y w i t h the p r o s p e r i n g of m a n k i n d he a s s u m e d - at l e a s t in C a p i t a l - o n l y the b a s i c i n c o m p a t i b i l i t y of m o d e r n t e c h n o l o g y u n d e r c a p i t a l i s t r e l a t i o n s w i t h t h e p r o s p e r i n g of m a n k i n d . He t h u s a s s u m e d , in c o n t r a d i c t i o n to the c r i t i c s of i n d u s t r i a l i s m , a b a s i c c o m p a t i b i l i t y b e t w e e n m o d e r n t e c h n o l o g y a n d the p r o s p e r i n g of m a n k i n d . A s m y a n a l y s i s w i l l s h o w, th i s j u d g e m e n t b y M a r x d o e s not s t a n d u p to the e m p i r i c a l e v i d e n c e . T h e 2 0t h c e n t u r y h a s s e e n a r a p i d d e v e l o p m e n t of p r o d u c t i v e f o r c e s w h i c h ha s b e e n p a r t l y e n h a n c e d by p u b l i c e n t e r p r i s e s or by s o c i a l i s t e n t e r p r i s e s (i.e. e n t e r p r i s e s in s o c i a l i s t c o u n t r i e s ) . In b o t h c a s e s the d a m a g i n g e f f e c t s d i d not d i s a p p e a r (as w e m i g h t e x p e c t on the b a s i s of M a r x ' s p r e d i c t i o n ) . O n t h e c o n t r a r y , it s e e m s t h a t s o c i a l i s t c o u n t r i e s p r e s e n t a n e v e n w o r s e e c o l o g i c a l r e c o r d in c o m p a r i s o n w i t h c a p i t a l i s t c o u n t r i e s . D o e s t h i s i n v a l i d a t e M a r x ' s a n a l y s i s ? A r e we to a b a n d o n h i s f r a m e w o r k s i n c e th e e m p i r i c a l f a c t s h a v e ( on c e m o r e ) b e l i e d h i s p r e d i c t i o n s ? M y a n s w e r is no. O n e r e a s o n is that he a n a l y s e d t h e i m p l i c a t i o n s of m a c h i n e - t e c h n o l o g y ( a b o v e a l l in the r e c e n t l y p u b l i s h e d M a n u s c r i p t s 1 8 6 1 - 3 ) a n d w a s a w a r e t h a t the t e c h n o l o g i c a l s t r u c t u r e of c a p i t a l i s m - no t o n l y the c a p i t a l i s t u s e of it - m a y be d e t r i m e n t a l for "t h e g o o d s o c i e t y " . A n o t h e r r e a s o n is t hat M a r x ' s p r e d i c t i o n , b a s e d on th e c o n c e p t s of th e c r i t i q u e of P o l i ­ t i c a l E c o n o m y , m a y h a v e b e e n f a l s i f i e d , t h o u g h n o t n e c e s s a r i l y o t h e r p a r t s of h i s t h e o r y . In i n v e s t i g a t i n g m o r e d e e p l y the

p h i l o s o p h i c a l a r g u m e n t , t h i s w o r k is a l s o d i s t i n g u i s h e d f r o m s o m e a t t e m p t s at " r e c o n s t r u c t i n g " a " g r e e n ” M a r x , a p r o c e d u r e w h i c h u s u a l l y r e s t s o n a c o m p i l a t i o n o f a p p a r e n t l y " g r e e n " s t a t e m e n t s by M a r x (cf. S c h m i e d - K o w a r z i k 1 9 8 4 ) . O n e o f t h e m is t h e f a m o u s p a s s a g e f r o m th e P a r i s M a n u s c r i p t s w h e r e M a r x s p o k e of a " h u m a n i z a t i o n of n a t u r e a n d n a t u r a l i z i n g of m a n " , w h i c h is u s u a l l y i n t e r p r e t e d as t h e y o u n g M a r x ' s d e s i r e to b r i n g a b o u t h a r m o n y b e t w e e n m a n a n d n a t u r e . In m y v i e w , s u c h a d h o c " r e c o n s t r u c t i o n s " of a n " e c o l o g i c a l M a r x " d o n o t r e v e a l i n t e r e s t i n g i n s i g h t s . For we a l l k n o w t h a t M a r x w a s no e c o l o g i s t , e v e n if h e c o u l d h a v e b e e n o n e . B u t s t i l l , t h e p h i l o s o p h i c a l M a r x m a y r e v e a l f u n d a m e n t a l a n d i l l u m i n a t i n g i n s i g h t s . M a r x ' s t h e o r y , a f t e r al l , a i m s at h u m a n e m a n c i p a t i o n . If w e f o r g e t t h is , M a r x w a s no t m u c h d i f f e r e n t f r o m a n e c o n o m i s t w h o m e a s u r e s h u m a n w e a l t h in t e r m s of p r i c e s a n d per c a p i t a i n c o m e . M a r x ' s l i f e w o r k c o n s i s t e d m a i n l y in s h o w i n g t hat c a p i t a l i s t e c o n o m y is a s t a t e o f a f f a i r s in w h i c h i n d i v i d u a l s a r e s y s t e m a t i c a l l y u n a b l e to c o n t r o l t h e o u t c o m e s of t h e i r a c t i o n s . C r i s e s , a l i e n a t i o n a n d f e t i s h i s m a f f e c t a l l m e m e b e r s of c a p i t a l i s t s o c i e t y , i.e. c a p i t a l i s t s , too, a r e c a u g h t in a s i t u a t i o n " u n w o r t h y o f t h e i r h u m a n n a t u r e " . P o s t - w a r p r o s p e r i t y a n d i n t e r v e n t i o n i s t t e c h n i q u e s o f t h e W e l f a r e s t a t e in t h e e c o n o m y h a v e l e d m a n y t o b e l i e v e t h a t t h e b a s i s for a s o c i a l i s t c r i t i q u e of c a p i t a l i s m h a s v a n i s h e d . Yet m a n y M a r x i s t s a n d M a r x o l o g i s t s f e e l t ha t t h e r a n g e of M a r x ' s t h e o r y is n o t e x h a u s t e d b y the f a c t t h a t c a p i t a l i s m h a s b r o u g h t a b o u t c o n s i d e r a b l e e c o n o m i c g r o w t h . T h e d e c i s i v e r e a s o n w h y M a r x ' s t h e o r e t i c a l r a n g e is w i d e r is b e c a u s e h e s t r e s s e s t h e n e e d for h u m a n c o n t r o l o v e r its fate. T h i s is to s a y t h a t , e v e n g r a n t e d t h a t c a p i t a l i s t e c o n o m y w o r k s s m o o t h l y ( w h i c h m a y s t i l l b e d o u b t e d o n g o o d g r o u n d s ) , t h e r e m a y be o t h e r r e s p e c t s in w h i c h h u m a n

c o n t r o l h a s n o t b e e n e s t a b l i s h e d . O n l y if s u c h a c o n t r o l is i m p r o b a b l e , i m p l a u s i b l e or e v e n u n d e s i r a b l e , w e w o u l d h a v e r e a s o n s to o p p o s e t h e u n d e r l y i n g l o g i c of h i s c r i t i q u e of c a p i t a l i s m . If w e t u r n a w a y , then, f r o m M a r x ' s p o l i t i c a l e c o n o m y , a n d e n t e r h i s p h i l o s o p h i c a l d i s c o u r s e , we e n c o u n t e r , f i r s t, the a b s t r a c t r e l a t i o n b e t w e e n m a n a n d n a t u r e , as a t r a n s h i s t o r i c a l c o n d i t i o n , a n d t h e n t h e s p e c i f i c h i s t o r i c a l f o r m s w h i c h t h is r e l a t i o n a s s u m e s . T e c h n o l o g i e s s e r v e as c r i t e r i a to d i s t i n g u i s h s u c h h i s t o r i c f o r m a t i o n s . N e e d l e s s to s a y t h a t in t h i s r e s p e c t M a r x is e q u a l l y c o n c e r n e d a b o u t p e o p l e ' s a b i l i t y to u n d e r s t a n d a n d c o n t r o l t h e w o r l d a r o u n d them. C e r t a i n l y , M a r x as a w r i t e r of t h e 1 9 t h c e n t u r y w a s r a t h e r o p t i m i s t i c as r e g a r d s t h e p o s s i b l i t i e s of s c i e n c e a n d t e c h n o l o g y in t h i s p r o c e s s . Bu t a g a i n , a l t h o u g h h i s e x p e c t a t i o n s h a v e n o t b e e n f u l f i l l e d , we s h o u l d n o t p r e m a t u r e l y d i s m i s s h i s t h e o r e t i c a l o u t l i n e . O n th e c o n t r a r y , if s c i e n c e a n d t e c h n o l o g y h a v e not b e e n i n s t r u m e n t s for m a n k i n d to s h a p e a w o r l d w h i c h is i n t e l l i g i b l e a n d c o n t r o l l a b l e , w e s t i l l l i v e in c o n d i t i o n s w h i c h h a v e to b e s u p e r s e d e d in o r d e r to a c h i e v e h u m a n e m a n c i p a t i o n , a ta s k in w h i c h M a r x ' s t h e o r y m a y be of hel p. W h e t h e r or n o t t h i s w i l l y i e l d v a l i d or f e a s i b l e s o l u t i o n s , it w i l l a r t i c u l a t e t he e c o l o g i c a l p r o b l e m s of i n d u s t r i a l s o c i e t i e s f r o m h i s p h i l o s o p h i c a l f r a m e w o r k . T h i s f r a m e w o r k is a u n i q u e c o m b i n a t i o n of v a r i o u s m o d e r n p h i l o s o p h i e s , s u c h as B a c o n s ' , K a n t s ' , H e g e l ' s , F e u e r b a c h ' s a n d o t h e r s . In s h a r p c o n t r a s t to t h i s , t h e d i s c o u r s e of f u n d a m e n t a l i s t e n v i r o n m e n t a l i s m p r o p o s e s to i n d u s t r i a l s o c i e t i e s t h a t t h e y a d o p t "a s i m p l e r l i f e " in o r d e r to s a f e g u a r d th e s u r v i v a l of t h i s p l a n e t . If the e c o l o g i c a l c h a l l e n g e is a c h a l l e n g e to b a s i c a s s u m p t i o n s of m o d e r n t h i n k i n g , le t us see, t he n , to w h a t u s e o n e v e r s i o n of t h e m o d e r n v i e w of n a t u r e , viz. t h e t h e o r y of K a r l M a r x , c a n be put.

T o s u m m a r i z e : t w o e x p e c t a t i o n s of M a r x h a v e b e e n d i s a p p r o v e d : t he e x p e c t a t i o n t h a t s c i e n c e a n d t e c h n o l o g y w o u l d c r e a t e an i n t e l l i g i b l e a n d c o n t r o l l a b l e w o r l d as w e l l as t h e e x p e c t a t i o n t h a t o n l y c a p i t a l i s t r e l a t i o n s s t a n d in the w a y of s u c h a goal. 3 u t e q u a l l y w r o n g a r e th e e n v i r o n m e n t a l i s t s w h o f o o l h e a r t e d l y b e l i e v e t h a t th e b a s i c f a u l t ha s to be s e e n in t h e a t t e m p t to h a r n e s s n a t u r e to h u m a n p u r p o s e s or to d e v e l o p p r o d u c t i v e f o rc e s .
