Unit 1- Family snapshots:

Functions: introducing yourself, checking the other’s identity, explaining your call, taking a message, passing on a message;

Vocabulary: extended families, relationships, families;

Grammar: used to, verbs + gerund or infinitive, each other/one another,

want/need/expect/force someone to do something, make someone do something.

Unit 2 - It’s a small world:

Functions: inviting, persuading, accepting, giving details of time and place, declining;

Vocabulary: cultural diversity, celebrations and festivals;

Grammar: defining relative clauses: who, that/which, where; no relative pronouns (contact clauses), indefinite pronouns, so/such…that.

Unit 3 - The technology revolution:

Functions: presenting a problem, listening/sympathising, offering solutions, apologising, asking for an explanation, offering an explanation, asking for action;

Vocabulary: mobile technology, touchscreen actions, technology;

Grammar: Present perfect continuous, Present perfect continuous vs Present perfect simple.

Unit 4 - Crime and punishment:

Functions: introducing a story, sequencing, prompting the speaker, reacting, checking the listener is following, rounding off the story;

Vocabulary: crime, justice and punishment;

Grammar: Past perfect, Past perfect vs Past simple, adverbs of time.

Unit 5 - Healthy body healthy mind:

Functions: asking for, giving, accepting, refusing advice and suggestions; asking about and describing symptoms, reacting;

Vocabulary: health problems; people, places and treatments in health care;

Grammar: should/ought to for advice and suggestions, modal verbs of obligation and necessity - must, have to, don’t have to (revision); need/needn’t/don’t need to;

Unit 6 - State of the arts:

Functions: making deductions about the present, giving reasons, confirming opinions, expressing tentative agreement, making guesses about the past, contradicting;

Unit 7- Media matters:

Functions: explaining the stages of a process, asking for information, showing understanding, showing lack of understanding;

Vocabulary: mass media, broadcast media;

Grammar: the passive, causative have/get, reflexive pronouns.

Unit 8 - Shop till you drop:

Functions: identifying and discussing options, justifying choices, coming to a decision, giving reasons against options, giving up;

Vocabulary: money and shopping, advertising;

Grammar: Zero and first conditionals (revision), second conditional, I wish/if only.

Unit 9 - One world:

Functions: interrupting and regaining control of a conversation, criticising, responding to criticism;

Vocabulary: natural disasters, ecology;

Grammar: third conditional, conditionals (revision), I wish/if only + Past perfect, non- defining relative clauses.

Unit 10 - Just the job!:

Functions: asking for repetition and clarification, rephrasing, checking understanding, making time to think, confirming what has been said;

Vocabulary: jobs and training, job skills and personal qualities, school exams and preparation;

Grammar: reported statements, reported questions, reported requests and

imperatives.
