Master’s Degree Yacht Design (Engineering)
Year/semester
Course title Yacht Construction Technologies
ID Course Code
Course Credit (CFU) 6
Scientific-Disciplinary Sector ING-IND/02 Course Type
Professor Marco Gaiotti
Education objectives The course aims at providing the student with the capability of scantling a typical marine composite structure considering a direct computation of the intra laminar stresses obtained from the classic laminate theory (CLT). The course also presents the industrial manufacturing techniques to build a multi- layered fibre-reinforced composite structure.
Learning outcomes Composites in shipbuilding: reference to pleasure craft engineering, features required by ship structures and offered by composites.
Reinforcements and matrix materials applied in marine industry, features and production techniques.
Matrix chemical composition, applications, cure conditions (polyester and epoxy resins).
Building stages of a composite structures.
Exothermic reactions and limit thickness, workability of composite structures and "green time", chemical-mechanical adhesion.
Sandwich: features, capabilities, building methods.
Classic laminate theory, from continuum mechanics to the orthotropic elastic theory.
Material characterization according to classification societies rules.
Damage repair and fire protection
