Thesis title: Applicability of OpenFOAM CFD code to the study of low and high pressure fuel injectors.

Abstract

Flows inside low and high pressure injectors are characterized by non negligible turbulence and gradients, therefore a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis is necessary in order to evaluate velocity and pressure fields.

Producers of CFD commercial softwares provide interfaces for an easy pre/post processing, user manuals and a complete technical support, but the cost is not negligible.

The aim of this thesis is to understand if OpenFOAM open source software can be actually used by the computer modelling department of Siemens VDO in Pisa in parallel with other codes.

OpenFoam has been tested on two typical cases, low pressure and high pressure, of Siemens VDO injector flows. Computational grids (meshes) have been realized with ICEMCFD 10.0 and the OpenFOAM tool Paraview has been used as post processor.

OpenFOAM resulted to be non suitable for industrial use because interface air/fuel problems emerge in multiphase calculus and embedded routines don’t allow high speed in calculation. Finally the results are excessively mesh quality dependent.
