Laboratory Sessions
During the course, there will be some laboratory work that will be held on:
Thursday 8:00am – 12:00am Location to be defined from time to time.
The dates of the laboratory sessions will be communicated during the course.
The students will be requested to file individual reports on their laboratory work (max 5 pages). The reports will be evaluated on the basis of a PASS/NO PASS mark. Students with a NO PASS mark for some of the lab reports will not be admitted to the final exam.
Topics of the laboratory sessions
Under normal conditions (pre-COVID) the laboratory sessions would devoted to:
Lab Session 1 (Dipartimento SBAI - Prof.Michelotti): Laboratory practice with Snell laws; measurement of the refractive index of a liquid; practice with lenses and mirrors.
Lab Session 2 (Dipartimento SBAI - Prof.Michelotti): Experimental demonstration of the interference and diffraction phenomena.
Lab Session 3 (Dipartimento SBAI - Prof. F. Michelotti): Absorption spectroscopy in alcoholic and water solution of selected organic molecules.
Lab Session 4 (ENEA CR Frascati - Prof. F.Michelotti, Dott.ssa Montereali, Dott.ssa Vincenti): CW fluorescence spectroscopy in alcoholic and water solution of selected organic molecules.
Lab Session 5 (IIT – Nanolife Sciences - Dott. S. De Panfilis and in collaboration with Dipartimento di Biologia Molecolare C.Darwin – Dott.ssa A. Cirigliano): Use of a wide-field and confocal fluorescence microscope to study yeast cells labelled with DAPI, GFP, RFP.
Lab session 6 (Dipartimento SBAI- Prof.Michelotti): Measurement of the SPP resonance in ATR regime;
Resonance shift due to the injection of several different liquids with varying refractive index; photonic crystal sensors.
Due to COVID restrictions the program of the laboratory sessions will be rearranged as follows:
Lab Session 1 Confirmed – Date to be defined Lab Session 2 Confirmed – Date to be defined
Lab Session 3 Probably will be substituted by an on-line demonstration in which the teacher will show the equipment and the experiment with a camera – Date to be defined
Lab Session 4 Will surely be substituted by an on-line demonstration in which the teacher will show the equipment and the experiment with a camera – Date to be defined
Lab Session 5 Not yet confirmed – Date to be defined
Lab session 6 Probably will be substituted by an on-line demonstration in which the teacher will show the equipment and the experiment with a camera – Date to be defined
IMPORTANT NOTE Due to COVID emergency, the students can request to substitute the lab work with alternative home work.
Final stage
By the end of the course the students will be asked to attend a final laboratory stage.
Under normal conditions, during such a stage the students go in one of the laboratories where they had the laboratory sessions and work side by side with one researcher during his/her daily routine. The aim of the stage is not to perform individual work but to take part as an observed to the laboratory experiments.
After the stage the students will be requested to file and individual report on their final stage (max 15 pages). The report will be evaluated on the basis of a PASS/NO PASS mark. Students with a NO PASS mark for the final stage will not be admitted to the final exam.
This year, due to COVID restrictions, we have not yet planned how to arrange such a stage. Where possible, we shall try to organize the stage for those students who will request it.
IMPORTANT NOTE Due to COVID emergency, the students can request to substitute the lab work with alternative home work.
Intermediate Tests and Final exam
Intermediate tests
During the course there will be 4 intermediate tests on the topics explained during the lectures held in the immediately preceding weeks. The tests will be based on a multiple choice answer format.
The tests will be handled by means of the Sapienza E-Learning Portal (Moodle). They will held be either in a hall (with presence) or on-line.
Final Written Exam
After the end of the course, the students who will have got an average mark of the intermediate tests that is sufficient (Example: 12, 24, 18, 30 21 sufficient), will have the possibility to skip the written exam and to get as a mark of the written exam the mean of the marks of the intermediate tests.
The written exam is based on a complete test with numerical multiple choice questions on all topics of the course. Also, students with a sufficient mark coming from the tests can decide to undergo the final written exam. In that case the mark will substitute the mark coming from the intermediate tests.
The written exam will held be either in a hall (with presence) or on-line.
Final Oral Exam
The written exam will be followed by an oral colloquium in which the student will be asked to describe the work done during the final stage. The oral colloquium will contribute to the final mark with plus (+) or minus (–) 3 points.
The oral exam will held be either in a hall (with presence) or on-line.
Individual teacher to student meetings
The teacher will be available to reply to individual questions from students, concerning the topics explained during the lectures, every:
Wednesday 15:00 – 17:00
The question time will be public and will be held on-line at the same Google Meet address used for the lectures:
https://meet.google.com/lookup/hlpin2g3me
After the end of the course the teacher will remain available for the individual meetings by means of the same procedure. However, the students needing assistance will have to contact the teacher the day before by e-mail, so as he will have time to plan/modify his agenda.
Students who will take part to the meeting are informed that, when they will keep the camera and microphone switched on, their image and/or their voice will be shared with all students taking part to the meeting.
IMPORTANT - The streamings of the individual meetings will not be recorded and will not be made available after the meeting.
For any personal question/problem concerning the Biophotonics Laboratory course, the students are invited to contact the teacher directly by e-mail:
