There are many forms of interacting with the woods, either by making it your source of livelihood, by exploiting it or just to get pleasure out of it. Human beings are the only species on the planet that destroys and then recreates woods, altering their nature.

However, these fast-paced alterations and the uncontrolled invasion of the environment lead to consequences, which sooner or later are going to affect all living beings. Because of the deterioration, the indifference and the neglect of their own home, human beings are now faced with the consequences caused by the environmental decay, which is now making them, the culprits, sick.

The forests that have lost their primary state, if used and cared for in a respectful and balanced way, allow the coexistence with inhabited areas, which are necessary for the survival of a rural society and culture.

The valley where the Verzasca Foto Festival takes place is covered in thick woods. Not long ago, trees were the primary form of livelihood for the inhabitants of these mountains, from the roots growing on the hillsides and the cut trunks fl oating down the rivers to the ashes that their ancestors collected in the chimney of the city.

Nowadays, the global awareness regarding the importance of preserving forests and sowing new trees is the response to the swift to the current climate emergency. Today as yesterday, we are the ones who need the forests, not the other way around. Once again, in occasion of the seventh edition of the festival, we wish to reiterate our goal. Through outdoor exhibitions im- mersed in nature, we aim to bring together people who have had different views and different experiences in the woods. This event has always sought interaction with the territory and the people who inhabit it. A community that lives surrounded by the forest, which uses it and cares for it, establishing a harmonious coexistence. A place where the works of photographers from all over the world blend gently with it for a season.

In the small stone villages surrounded by beeches, chestnut and larch trees, the explorer-visitor can experience the mountains through art and nature, together with photographers, enthusiasts and the local community. Their experience will be accompanied by meetings in a convivial environment, group exhibitions, round tables, live music and audio-visual projections.

The forest can be a place of solitude but also a vital meeting place. Underground, the roots of different trees unite, communi- cating and feeding each other. We want the same to happen above it, through the confl uence of people from different cultures and sensibilities.

Molteplici sono le forme d’interagire con il bosco: sostentamen- to, sfruttamento, svago. A differenza di altre, l’essere umano è la sola specie che attraverso opere di distruzione e ricreazione ne modifi ca radicalmente la sua natura.

Tuttavia, l’alterazione accelerata e l’invasione incontrollata dell’ambiente conducono a conseguenze, che prima o dopo coinvolgono tutti gli esseri viventi. Così, al culmine di usura, indifferenza e trascuratezza nei confronti della sua casa, anche l’essere umano è confrontato con il disfacimento dell’ambiente che ammalato fa ammalare il principale responsabile.

I boschi che hanno abbandonato lo stato primario, se adoperati e custoditi in maniera rispettosa e d equilibrata, permettono però la convivenza con le superfi ci abitate, necessarie alla so- pravvivenza di una società e una cultura di carattere rurale.

Una folta superfi cie boschiva cresce sopra i terreni rocciosi della Valle che ospita il Verzasca Foto Festival. Per gli abitanti di queste montagne, in un passato non molto lontano, gli alberi erano tra le principali fonti di sussistenza, partendo dalle radici che crescono sui pendii, ai tronchi tagliati che viaggiavano lungo i fi umi, fi no alle ceneri che gli avi raccoglievano nei camini delle città.

Nel presente, la consapevolezza a livello globale dell’impor- tanza del mantenimento dei boschi e la semina di nuovi alberi sono una risposta al rapido evolversi dell’emergenza climatica.

Ieri come oggi, siamo sempre noi a necessitare il bosco, non il contrario.

Anche quest’anno, con la settima edizione desideriamo riba dire l’essenza del carattere espositivo del festival. Attraverso mostre all’aperto in natura, ci proponiamo di far confl uire diffe- renti contesti e approcci umani in relazione alle superfi ci boschi- ve. Da sempre, questo evento cerca l’interazione con il territorio e le persone che lo abitano. Una comunità che vive circondata dal bosco, che usa e cura instaurando una convivenza armonica.

Un luogo dove le opere di fotografi di tutto il mondo si mescola- no delicatamente con esso per una stagione.

Nei piccoli villaggi in pietra circondati da faggi, castagni e larici, l’esploratore-visitatore potrà vivere esperienze in montagna tra arte e natura, insieme a fotografi , appassionati e comunità locale. Momenti accompagnati da incontri in un ambiente convi- viale, esposizioni collettive, tavole rotonde, musica dal vivo e proiezioni audio-visive.

Il bosco può essere luogo di solitudine ma anche d’incontro vitale. Nel sottosuolo le radici di differenti alberi si uniscono, comunicando e alimentandosi a vicenda. Sopra di esso deside- riamo che avvenga lo stesso tramite il confl uire di persone di diverse culture e sensibilità.

There are many forms of interacting with the woods, either by making it your source of livelihood, by exploiting it or just to

get pleasure out of it. Human beings are the only species on the planet that destroys and then recreates woods, altering

their nature. However, these fast-paced alterations and the uncontrolled invasion of the environment lead to consequences, which

sooner or later are going to affect all living beings. Because of the deterioration, the indifference and the neglect of their own home, human beings are now faced with the consequences

Sonogno easy accessive by car or by bus. If you land at the Milan Malpensa Airport (138 km/Sonogno) or at the Zurich Airport (234 km/Sonogno) you can take the train to either Locarno or Tenero and then take the bus (nr. 321). If you come by foot... follow the river!

Sonogno, a small village at the head of the Verzasca Valley.

HOW TO GET HERE

Sonogno easy accessive by car or by bus. If you land at the Milan Malpensa Airport (138 km/Sonogno) or at the Zurich Airport (234 km/Sonogno) you can take the train to either Locarno or Tenero and then take the bus (nr. 321).

If you come by foot... follow the river!
