Rector Major and his Council were receivedin
special au- dience by the Supreme Pontiff.It
was our desire tothank His
Holinessfor what
he has granted us in connectionwith
the centenary celebrationsof
'88, andin
particularfor
the ApostolicBrief
regardingthe
special"Year of grace" and his promise
to cometo Turin in
the firsthalf of
September 1988.The audience took place in a family atmosphere and
with
a friendly conversation duringwhich
we were ableto
note once againthe
Pope's concernfor the
young,his profound admiration for
Don Bosco,and the fatherly
esteemhe has for
our Congregation andthe whole

commentshe
made about the members andtheir
activities, he renrin- ded us that we are "charismatics ofyouth",
and aswe took our leave of

a smilethat we must be so especially in the present time

cultural transformation. The audience proved to be a significant anticipation of the spiritual and eccle- sial depthwith which we
hopeto
commemorate the event of the centenary.This
encouraging encounter alsomarked
the endof the
plenary sesionof the
General Council,which on I
December had begun a period ofwork lasting more than two months' Among
other things, we were able to examine and approve more than 40 provincial chapters, and it was consoling to note the serious and practical manner in which theprovincial
directorieshad
beendrawn up. I
am more and more convinced of the Lord's love for us, andthat
he iswith
us as we lay solid foundationsfor
a better future.We shall prepare ourselves to express, all togeth-
er, our
gratitudeto
Godour
Fatherby an
actof particular
significance.On 14May
1988 (as stated in this edition of the Acts,p.
42) we shall renew inour
provinces and housesour
religious profession.The date
is a
Saturdayin the month of May,
andmarks the
anniversaryof the
salesian profession madeby Don
Boscoand his first
chosen youngmen of
Valdocco.On that day the
Congregationwill
feel itself spiritually renewed and ready to face up to the new timeswith
the same enthusiasm and same creativedaring of its founder. Let us
take note of this at once, and set about preparingfor it

the subject of your me- ditation) invites usto
intensifu the community andactivity of the
Salesian Family sothat it may
ap- proach 1988 (and beyond!) as a real "Ecclesial Mo- vement"of missionariesof
the Young. The various consecrated Groupsin the Family
already have their texts and subsidiary aids, born of the conciliar renewal,which
can lead themto
greater authenti- city. More recently the Cooperators have drawn up the new text oftheir
Regulations of Apostolic Life,of which I
hope-
dear confreres- that you
allhave a copy. You have also been already encoura- ged by one of my earlier circular letters to make a serious effort
to
gain a good understandingof
Don Bosco's thought in their regard and to take up both as individuals and communitiesthe
responsibilityfor their
animation.2I would like now to reflect more
deeplywith
youon
the importanceof
the Past'Puplls,the
na-ture of their
Association and the particular reasonfor their
participationin the
Family, and hence in Don Bosco's mission.I
considerthis
a matterof
nolittle
importance in the renewal of our Congregation. Every confrere needs to reflect onit,
and provincial and local com- munities areinvited to review
and relaunchin
apractical manner
the
responsibilitythey
sharefor the
animation and revitalizationof this
immense and promising Association.The heart and activity of the Salesian cannot be circumscribed
by
the wallsof
hisown
house. The thoughtsI
nowput
before you may be considered as a deeper treatment and developmentof
rvhatI
have already said
in the
circularson the
Salesian Family 3 and onthe
Laity.4Our point of
departureand
referencecan
beart. 5 of the
Constitutions,which
statesthat
the Past-Pupilsform part of the
Salesian Family. The reason for their membership is given as "the educa-tion
they have received";in
realitythis
education gives risein them to different
levelsof
participa-tion,
somemore
closelylinked with the
salesian missionin
theworld,
and some less so. The recent"Guide to the
Salesian Constitutions" notes that"past pupils are particularly prepared, precisely be- cause
of the
education they have received,to
as-sume
a
responsibilityin
collaboratingfor the
at- tainmentof
the objectives inherentin the
salesian plan". The 'choice of the Gospel' made by manyof
them "is not an alternative to the title of 'education received',but
rather a special expression ofit: it
is not therefore a separatetitle
applicable to a kindof
new group".sI think that what
is statedby art.

The title of
Past-Pupilsto
membershipof
the salesianFamily "by

education they have received" is densein

many fun- damental qualities.It
prompts usto
make a wide- ranging examinationof
consciencewith
regard toour
educational and pastoralactivity. A
glance at the history of our originswill
show us how import-ant this is, by pointing out the
bondsthat

Don Ceria tells us thatit
was born"like
oneof
those thingsthat
arisefrom
spontaneous natural causes";6it
sprang from the family spiritof the
preventive systemat the
Valdocco Oratory.Don Bosco himself has written that his style of edu- cation "makes the pupil a
friend",
and enables the educatorto
speakto him in the
languageof
the heart, not only while he is at schoolbut
later on aswell,
evenwhen the former pupil is in
employ-ment, civil service or business. 7
It
is an educational methodwhich
has ledto
profound changesin
be-haviour
(Michael Magoneis an
example), which has ledto the
heightsof
sanctify (Dominic Savio,for
instance),and a permanent communion of
ideals and feelingswith the
educatorsall
through life (and that is where the Past-Pupils come in). The atmosphere of living together, of happiness, friend-ship
and development breathedby
youngstersof
different cultural origins and social conditions, has the power to create between educators and pupils akind of
spiritual relationshipwith
bondsof
mutual esteem, affection and idealsof life which
endurein
time."The boys felt themselves loved
by
Don Bosco, not just as simple pupils but as sons, and becauseof
this there arose naturally in them, when they grewup, the thought of
goingback to their
father's house.And this
spontaneousreturn
continues to take place to the schools and houses where is sownthis 'homing instinct' felt by former pupils,
and wherethe spirit
and methodof
Don Boscois
stillto
befound.
The Past Pupils' Movement was not therefore something started upby
the educators as an associationfor
school-leaversfor

selected membership;it "grew up on
itsown" with
a charismaticvitality
at its beginnings.s17 years with Don Bosco
The Past-Pupils Group began
to
takeon
a cer-tain
consistency even during Don Bosco' own life- time. Its beginning can be assigned to Don Bosco's feastdayon 24 June
1870.On that
occasion a dozenor
soformer
pupils came together officiallyunder the
leadershipof the
genizrland
generous Carlo Gastini, who always looked on the Oratory ashis
secondfamily. They set about finding
more members andthen formed a
commissionfor
the better organization of future annual manifestationsof their
affection and gratitude.In this way the
feast increasedin
scope from yearto
year, becominga triumphal
expressionof grateful appreciation. After some years it
wasfound
necessaryto divide the
manifestation intotwo
sectionsor
meetings: oneon
Sundayfor
thelay past-pupils, and another on the
following Thursdayfor
thosewho
had become priests; thelatter
becamequite
numerousand to them
the good Father continually recommended the careof
the young.e Little bylittle,
especially after Don Bos- co's death, they became further subdivided into lo-cal
groups, unions and societies, andit

eventuallygot them
organized efficientlyin
a practical form.The period
from
1870to
1888, i.e.the
17 years during which Don Bosco was directly in touchwith them, provide us with a
greatdeal of food for thought; they
enableus to
seemore clearly
the meaning of theirtitle to

for
his pupils; when they had finishedtheir
schooling he neverforgot
them,but
followed themup,
hel-ped them, invited them back,
welcomed them, encouragedthem,
guidedthem still,
admonishedthem if
necessary, andwas
concerned especiallyfor their spiritual
good.In
oneof the
numerous encounterswith
them, he said:"I
seethat
quite anumber of you have lost your
hair; in

You are no longer the boysI

"My
dear sons, one thingI
recommend to you above all else:wherever
you

always conduct yourselves as good christians andupright
citizens... Manyof you
already have afamily.

children the same education you receivedfrom
Don Bosco here at the Oratory".1rCanon Berrone tells us
that "in
those meetingswith his former pupils Don

them to keep the Oratory spirit alive in society, and many
of them
availed themselvesof the
opportu-nity to
seek his counsel".r2In
1883, during hisvisit to
Paris, after he had spoken about his educational method he answered a question by a person who expressed doubts aboutthe
perseveranceof the
young artisans once they had left the Oratory and gone into the armyor
theworld of work:

Saturday eve-nings and Sunday mornings. And then in the Italian army
it
iswell known that
thosewho
come from our workshops practisetheir
faith;in
fact, the oth- erscall them the

tried to engrave on your hearts when you were youngsters".laIn the other salesian houses too, those of recent foundation, the same communion of life, stemming
from the
education received,was
observed. Weread, for
instance,that in
Montevideounder
the leadershipof
Don Lasagna,who took the spirit of the
Oratorythere, quite a number of
youngsters"either when they went home
for
holidaysor
after leavingthe
college, setup
real festive oratories intheir
own houses"; andin
this way there gradually cameinto
existencean
organizationof
oratories presided overby a
past-pupilDr

During the
yearsof direct contact with
Don Bosco there were two particularly significant initia- tives regarding his former pupils.The
first
wasin
1876,when
Don Bosco finally launchedthe
Pious Unionof
Salesian Cooperators after long yearsof
planning and experiments. He gavegreat
importanceto his tiring work
as the Founder and he invitedthe
more committed ones among hisformer
pupils tojoin this
Pious Union.In
oneof the
yearly manifestationsof the
formerpupils following that date Don
Boscosaid:
"The suggestionto
involve eachof you in the
develop- ment of thework
of the Salesiari Cooperators is an excellent idea, because the Cooperators are sustai- ners of God's works by means of the Salesians...it
is a
work
designed to shake people out of the iner-tia in which
so many christians are bogged down, and spread the energy of charity".16 An soin

Cooperators were referredto
officially for the first time; and since former pupils viedwith
each otherin joining the
Pious Union (as appearsfrom a letter of

in
1878: Don Bosco suggestedto his former
pupilsthe
settingup of a "Mutual
Help Society"to
meet difficultiesthat might
arise:"I
suggestthat you
donot
benefitjust
yourselves alone, but reach out in emergencies to some of the well-behaved studentswho
haveleft the
Oratory, or to your former companions, or to everyone here present".18 Carlo Gastini, leader of the former pup-ils,
immediately setto work to
organize such an association, using as a basis a set of regulationsfor a mutual
aid societythat

Don Rinaldi, inspirer and organizer
After Don Bosco's death his former pupils contin- ued
their
annual manifestation aroundthe
person of Don Rua, making of the feast of the Rector Ma-jor
a great demostration of gratitude, and when on 1April
1901 Don Rua recalled DonPhilip
Rinaldi to Turin from Spain (where he had been provincial) to take on the important office of Vicar General (or Prefect General, asit
was then called), the various groups of former pupils foundin him
an extraordi- nary animator and a very efficient organizer.During his twenty years as Prefect General Don Rinaldi managed
to bring
abouta
reorganizationwith
humble discretion, arranging matters so thatit
seemed that the main architects were the former pupils themselves or one of the collaborators work- ingwith
him.In
this way he was able to give an or- ganic structureto
a movement based on affection, gratitude and idealsof living, which
madeof
the"education received" a
living
and dynamic force.In
1906he
founded amongthe
past pupilsof Turin
the "Don Bosco Circle" which quickly devel- opedinto
oneof
the best salesian dramatic socie- ties, and served as an example for similar organiza- tions.ln
1907to
a confrere leavingfor
Spain, he said:"Look after the Past-Pupils: they are our crown; or,
if
you preferit,
they are the reasonwhy
we exist, becausebeing an
educational Congregationit
isclear
that we
educatenot for
schoolbut for

Now the true life, the
reallife,
begins when they have leftour
houses".2oTo his
work
of animation Don Rinaldi added his far-sighted realizationof the
needfor
an organiza-tion,
and suggested practical ways of bringing this about. On 25 June 1909 heput
forward the ideaof
an international confederation, andto
promoteit
he made use of the well-deserving "Commission
of
Don Bosco's Former Pupils"which, from
the time of Gastini, had been organizing the annual manifes- tations at Valdocco. The structure was formally in- auguratedin the first international
Congressof
Past-Pupilsin
1911, as a Federation of the many lo-cal unions,
circlesand
societies.Until then
they had been called "Former Pupils" ("Antichi Allievi");from that date onwards they were known as "Past
Fupils" ("Exallievi") a
nameDon Rinaldi had
al- ready begunto
use earlier.By June
l9l2 it
was already possible to organize an "Administrative Council" and nominate the first Presidentin the
personof Prof. Piero
Gribaudi."It
was said, not without justification", commented Don Ceria,"that
this was something quite new in the historyof
pedagogy".2lDuring those years Don Rinaldi,
who
was also confessorof the
Sistersand
zealousanimator of
their Oratory for girls, was also concernedwith
the organization of the Past Pupils of the Daughtersof Mary Help of
Christians,so that they too
might grow and eventually be structured as a Federation.As Rector Major he
took
a constant interest inthe functioning
andvitality of the Union of
PastPupils, and was distressed
to
discoverthat not
allthe
confreres had understoodits
importance. Forthis
reasonhe
earnestly recommendedit to
the careof

good christians.And for that
reason this Organization is an ongoing work: through it we want to bring back those who have gone astray; ...we have sacrificed ourselves

beatification, declared:"Once
in
a meeting of Past Pupils, hearing that the latter werein
difficulties as to how they could meetthe whole cost (Lire
1,500)of their
ceremonial meal,which he
enjoyedvery much, without
put-ting
a strain on the financesof
the local Institute, the Servant of God declared thatif
a salesian house had only 1,500 lire to its credit, he would gladly ap- prove the spending of the wholelot
on the mealfor
the Past Pupils, because no sacrifice would be more satisfying to his heartif it
helped to bring togerher aroundhim
his beloved sons".23Don Ceria observes:
"If
was said very forcibly,but in

to be a dynamic and living force doing goodin

have tried to emphasize, albeitbriefly, the work
andthought of
Don Rinaldi be- cause his figure comes to life again in our hearts at the present day,with
the hope we havethat
soon hewill
be beatified.It

faithful
and fertile discipleof the
Father,with
a deep intuitive understandingof his
greatnessof heart
and soul, andthat of
thelatter
he developed some precious seedswhich had not yet
germinated.We
well know, for example, the story of the Don Bosco Vo- lunteers; thatof
the Past Pupils is equally clear.Arturo
Poesio statedin
fact: "Don Rinaldi's elo- quencewas simple and
spontaneousand at
the same time fatherly and convincing. Only once didI
hear
him
speakwith
an aspect and language of au- thority, and that was when he declared in his capac-ity
of Rector Major of the Salesian Society, that the Organization of the Past Pupils must be considered asbeing one of the "new families" which
Don Bosco had themerit
of causingto
spring upin
the Church, as was saidin the
Collectproper to
the Mass of the Saint".2sMay Don Rinaldi help us
by
his intercession to promote today, in a Church renewed by VaticanII, the
auspicious Associationof the
Past Pupils as a dynamic Group of the Salesian Family.Past Pupils "of Don Bosco"
It
is a fine and stimulating thing to note that the name givento
thosewho
have been pupilsin
our Houses isnot
"Salesian" Past Pupils,but
Past Pup- i]s"of
Don Bosco". ThisI
considerto
be a choicewhich,
though formulatedfor
thefirst time
at theOratory and then
continued everywherein
time and place, provides usat the
present daywith
aconcrete prograrnme. As we have seen already, the

Past Pupils were born, so to speak, by spontaneous generation through the "education received" from
Don
Bosco andhis first
collaborators.It
was an educationthat
forgedliving
bonds andwould
al- wayswant to be
expressed solelyin the
nameof
him who had iirspired and developedit
through the donationof
his heart and through his pedagogical brilliance, and who had concentrated all his talents and extraordinary personal qualitiesin
passingit
on to his followers:"that
you are young is enoughto
make me love you very much; foryou I
study,for
youI work, for
youI
live,for
youI
am ready evento

life".26 IndeedDon
Bosco dedi- cated himself to the education of the youngwith
all the sensitivity of his oratorian heart:"with
firmess and constancy ...in
the midst of difficulties and fa- tigue: 'he took no step, he said no word, he took up no taskthat
wasnot
directedto the
savingof
the yortng"'.z1His
pupils experiencedthis
personally, andfelt
growingin
themselvesthe
bondsof
son-ship, of gratitude, of
witnessto the
values con- tainedin
his lovingwork of
education.It
isin him
that wefind
the original secret and the pedagogical riches of an education that creates family ties.In
the First Past Pupils Congressof
1911,it
was decidedto
erect a monumentto
Don Boscoin
the squarein front of the
Basilicaat
Valdocco. Themonthly periodical
"Federazione",which
began publicationin
1913, coordinatedthe
collaboration and enthusiastic support of numerous men and wom-en
Past Pupilswho
appearedin the
subscription fists without specific distinction.28It
proved difficult to make a final selectionfrom
among the 62 sketch plans that were submittedfor
the monument. Fin-ally that of the artist

the great monument cannotbut think
of the living and worldwide significance of the "education received"in
Don Bosco's works.To speak today of "education received" as a title
to
membershipof the
Past Pupilsin the
Salesian Family means to call to mind once again the charis- matic conditions of the origins andto
dwell on the way they have been prolonged and homogeneously developedin
more than a hundred years.We
find
ourselves therefore contemplating ati
tle to
membershipwhich
formsa
genuinepart of
the Founder's charism. For a better understanding of its nature andto
clarify its practical and organi- zational requirementsin the
presentcultural

Education is not the same
thing
as a simple in-troduction to
the environment and culture proper to a society;it
is more than that.It
is certainly true that at the present day one must takeinto
account the profound process of human evolutionwhich
isin
progressin both
theWorld
andin the
Church,with its resulting problems,
some negative and some positive. Among negative problems are a plu- ralistic relativism, doctrinal and ethical confusion, totalizingpolitical
tendencies unjust economic sit-uations, conflicts and
antagonisms,laicism
and atheism,the family crisis,
emarginationand
the new formsof
neglectof the
young. Onthe
other hand there are the positive aspects: a new growthin
human values stemmingfrom the
signsof
the times, the courageous ecclesial perspectives openedup by the Council, the great commitment to
anew evangelization, a more concrete sense
of
soli-darity
and peace, an efficacious desireto
provide spacefor
a civilization of love, etc. All this is an in- dication of the tremendous need to enlighten man's freedom and provide a better formation ofit
from his youth.The period of history in which we are at present
living
givesprimary
emphasisto
education,but
at the same time raises numerous problems concern- ing its purposes, content, methods, means and in-stitutions. A renewed concept of education
is urgently needed, onethat is
concrete andto
thepoint, not
abstractand
generic;one that is
all- embracingfrom
a human point of view, and up to date in linewith

one that is directed to the at- tainment of a mature and proper freedom through processes of growth appropriate to age and existen- tial conditions; one that is capable of critical discern-ment as

future perspectives; only in this waywill

consideredto
be one of the components of Don Bosco's charisma; in this senseit
has been analysedin
depthin
our postcon- ciliarwork,
and especiallyin
the GC21.Education is
for
us like a road along which our salesian apostolic consecration moves. We evange- lize"by
educating"; we promoteculture "by
edu-cating"; we play our part in the
commitment to justice and peace"by
educating"; we promote the developmentof
the individual"by
educating"; wecontribute to the building up of the church
"by educating".The GC2l told us that the

"does not indicate only a set of contents to be trans-
mitted or a
seriesof
methodsor
proceduresfor
communicating them.It
is not pure pedagogy, nor isit
solely catechesis. The preventive system, asit
has been lived
by
Don Bosco and by his followers, is always like a rich synthesis of contents and meth- ods;of
processesof
human development and also of proclamation of the Gospel and of deepening the christianlife. In its
goals,in its
content andin
its actual implementation it brings to mind at once the three wordsby which
Don Bosco definedit:
rea-son, religion, kindness".3o
This group of three words
will
go down throughthe
centuries.What we
haveto do at
present is rethink their application in the light of the different culturesin which we work, but with our
eyes al- wayson
Don Bosco's Oratory asthe
model from which we draw inspiration.Let us
look
rapidly, therefore, at some sugges- tions, which already seem very obvious to all of us,but which
challengeour
educational renewalwith
respectto the
relaunchingof the
Past Pupils and the concrete purposes oftheir
Association.- In
additionto
its basic corrnotationof
"com- mon sense", theterm
"reason" evokes at the pres-ent day the idea of the different
anthropological disciplines which go to make up the so-called "edu- cational sciences",to
whose deeper development and teaching are dedicated two salesian faculties in Rome,that of the
UPS andthe "Auxilium" of
the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. The different cultures and the changes stemmingfrom
the signs of the times callfor
new competencein
educators and the ability to constantly revise the practical ap- plicationsof
the educative project. The humanistic outlook in its overall content, the formation to free-r" Gc21, 80

dom in the pursuit and
preservationof what
is good ('preventiveness'!),the
authentic conceptof
love and an objective view of sexuality, the presen- tation of ideals in which life appears as mission, the responsibilityfor

a correct moral conscience, the sense of solidarity, family and polit-ical
aspectsof life, the
realitiesof the
temporal orderwith
respect to their authentic lay condition, the dignity and role of women, the broad horizons of justice and peace, introduction to the promotingof

goodwill,
adequate self-discipline in life, etc.; these areall
concrete challengesto
today's educatorsif
their
pedagogicalactivity is to be really in

The term"religion" for
Don Bosco represen- ted an absolutely indispensable componentof
edu- cation.In
the central nucleusof
every culture reli- gious values are always to be found; even a hypoth- etical atheistic culturewould
haveat its
centre asthe stimulation of its structure the negation of God.
In
Don Bosco religion is the motive and thrust be-hind all his work of
education.For him
religion meant,in fact, the
Catholic Faith; he educated to the Gospelof
Christ by the pedagogical promotion and maturingof
the baptismaloption of
his boys.At the present day Vatican
II
has opened up broad frontiersof
renewalin
this regard,which
demand of us who are educators a new and robust compet- encein
evangelization and the teachingof
catech- ism. There is an urgent needfor
us to take up this prophetic legacy left us by the Council.In
particu-lar, the term "religion",
aswell as implying
anupdated ecumenical sensitivity between
non- Catholic christians, requires in the case of manyof

us a direct
knowledgeand
appreciationof
thosc non-christian religionswhich
are practisedin
nu- merous areas where we have educational centres.Openness
to what is
transcendent,the
searchfor truth
about God, the pedagogy of prayer, the valueof
celebrationsin different cults, the
meaningof
human brotherhood, the sacredness of life, an ethic and spirituality of behaviour, a concrete mannerof
ascetical practice, the gratuitous gift inherent in liv- ing and working, the particular values and also the defects of popular religious practices etc., are allof them important
aspectsof an
educational system which sets out to form to practical freedom. In this fielstoo the
educator hasthe
delicatebut
indis- pensable task of being on the alertto
detect objec- tively and prudently eliminate certain superstitious attitudes and religious andcultural
taboos unwor-thy of
humandignity
andin
evident contradictionwith
salvation history.-
Finally, theterm
"loving kindness" (Italian:"amorevolezza") indicates
that
emotional involve- mentwhich
constitutes oneof
the most character-istic
aspectsof the
educationalmethod of
Don Bosco.It implies the creation of an
educational environment permeatedby the family spirit,
bymutual
confidence, easy dialogue,joy
and friend- ship;by a life
together,not only with
regard to scholastic mattersbut
alsoin the
great varietyof
possibilitiesfor
the use of free time: sport, theatre, music, group activities, initiatives in the fields of so- cial service and the apostolate, etc.in
other wordsit implies that "oratorian
atmosphere" throughwhich
educationalwork
becomesfor the
young what the Oratory was:"a
homethat
welcomed, a schoolthat
preparedfor life, and a

such an atmosphere one can foster and accom- pany initiatives in which the youngsters themselves are the protagonistsin
group activitieswhich
give added sense to free time and makeit
usef-ul and at- tractive.The formation of a similar
"educational envi-ronment", in which
friendly relations develop bet- ween educators and pupils,is without
any doubtthe
elementwhich most
ensuresthe birth
andgrowth of those bonds of affection and
life
(almost of kinship) which, when the stage of youthful edu- cation comesto
an end,will
stay onin
the livesof the
Past Pupils;this
isthe main
reasonwhy
they continue to feel that they belong to Don Bosco andto
his family.Art.
5 of the Costitutions speaks of the "educa-tion they
have'received"'. To
have frequented a salesianwork
isnot
sufficientto
make onea
Past Pupilin
the real senseof
the word.In the
phrase 'Past-Pupil',the word 'Past'
isambiguous.
If it
simply implies the condition of onewho
when young frequenteda
salesianwork
and thenleft it
as one might leave a hotel,or
because disenchanted aboutit, it would not
serveto
indi- cate the nature of the Association and its member-ship of the
SalesianFamily; it would signify
no morethan a
groupof former
companions (which might be numerous or otherwise) for which the As- sociation might providein
some wayfor
the devel- opmentof
some educational valueswhich
had not beenproperly
developedin the earlier

Past Pupils come together and constitute the Association because they feel the bonds ofgrati
tude and think that together

the Salesians theycan update the "education they received"
and makeit
fruitftrl.Evidently the assimilation
of
the valueswill
ad-mit
of differencesin
degree and method accordingto
the receptive capacityof
each member.More
specifically:the
valuesof
'oreason" and"religion"
can be developedin
different situationswith
a certainpluriformity; but
at the level of "lov- ing kindness" there should be auniformly
intense degreeof
presencein
every salesianwork,
and in this wayit
becomes a yardstickfor
measuring the fidelityto
the preventive system on thepart
of the Salesians andtheir
collaboratorsin the
individual works. I really cannot understand how there can be a salesianwork which
doesnot look

Past Pupils; the history of the Oratory at Valdocco is far differentfrom
this.The fact that there are different ways and deg- rees
of
participationis
expressedin the
Constitu- tions themselves, when they sayin art.

Thelife of
local Unionsis
more easily perceived by the members, and is more deeply felt.Certainly

adeguate organizationat

level is not only useful but is also necessary; its purpose however, isto
serve, animate, make suggestions, stimulate, support (and sometimes even provide) the initiatives of the indi-vidual local
Unions, sothat they may be
able to expressin
a practical andfruitful
form the "educa-tion
they have received".Today, in the aftermath of Vatican II,
somelight
can bethrown
on the meaningof a
"closer"participation
in
the salesian mission by ecumenical guidelines,sTby an

to
the Salesian Cooperators.It is for this
reasonthat they
are invited tojoin
theCooperators: the community, say
our
Regulations,"should help those
who
are more sensitiveto
sale- sian values to develop in themselves the vocationof
a Cooperator".4r Nevertheless thetwo
Associations are specifically different onefrom the
other. That of the Past Pupils has its own physiognomy, linkedwith
the communion and initiatives stemming from the "education received".The Cooperators' Association is
not in
itself an alternativeto that of
the Past Pupils;it
constitutes rather a centre of spiritual and ecclesial referralfor
those who have made the gospel option. Past Pupilswho
are Cooperators generously maketheir
own, as convinced "laymen", the objectives of their own Past Pupils' Association and place at its disposal the richesof the
graceof
Christin the spirit of
DonBosco to bring to fruition among their
fellow members and their former companions the "educa-tion
they received".And so the assimilation of the values of the pre- ventive system presents a whole range of possibili- ties
for
a more or less close participation in the sal- esian mission in the world. As far as our own com- munities are concerned, extraordinary importance attachesto the
interest shownby
provincials and rectors (andtheir
delegates)in
providingthe
ani- mation thatwill
ensure the fidelitv of the membcrsto
the purposesof
the Association andto
the gen-uine inspiration of Don
Bosco.We must all
be ableto recall
andimitate the
understanding, thewilling
acceptance, the dedication and the initiati- ves of our Founder andof
Don Rinaldi. This is notan
easytask; it
needs competentand

people who are able to deal

mature men, and who have a clear and updated grasp of the preven- tive system.Some ways in which Past Pupils can take part in Don Bosco's mission
As
we
have seen,the title to
membership by reason of education received is not something sup- erficial imposedfrom without, like
gold plating on metal.It is
avital
realityof
gratitude,of
commu-nion and of
intentionsin the light of that
same eductional plan of the past lived now in new expe- riences of life,work
and study, and in personal and social perspectives.The nature and activity of the Association is in- trinsically linked
with
thistitle to
membership. Its vast horizons must be capable of discernment with-out
confusingit with either the
Cooperators' As-sociation
or any
independent secular association, thus distorting its identity.In
what way then can the Past Pupils' Associa-tion
sharein the life
and activitiesof the
Salesian Family? Let ustry to
give some orientative guide- lines startingfrom its history
andits
present-day reality.-
Afirst
way is thatof
showing practical con-cern
for
the "ongoingformation"
of the members.This is a task inherent in that "education received",
in
sofar
as all education (especially at this timeof
cultural change) needs to grow and make itself ade-quate
to
meetthe new
needsin a
continual and modern way. The statuteof
