4. Conclusions

Arthropod pests and vectors represent a huge problem of high economical importance worldwide. In this thesis, I focused on the behavioral ecology and control strategies of different pests, including the blue-bottle fly, C. vomitoria. For this ectoparasite the innate color preference were studied using a two-choice assays. Results suggested that the C. vomitoria has an innate preference for black color in every repetitions I made. Furthermore, lateralized behavior was evaluated both in I. ricinus and in L. sericata. In the first case, lateralization of questing behavior was analyzed in two different experiments. Results suggested that I. ricinus shows a lateralization at individual-level and at the population level. Lateralized results were recorded also studying the L.

sericata courtship and mating behavior traits, including foreleg tapping during pre-copula and

copula. Later on, I reviewed the current knowledge available about Mallophaga control, highlighting a severe lack of knowledge about potential eco-friendly control methods against chewing-lice. However, also the biological control of the other tested pests is not currently well investigated. Ethological studies can be helpful to plan develop novel and reliable control tools.
