From the Desk of Michael Sennett "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it." - Aristotle Dear Parishioners, “Put on your thinking caps!” When I was in elementary school, the teachers often used this phrase when instructing students to solve a problem that required reasoning. K-12 and higher education curriculums are grounded in learning and sharpening critical thinking skills. After all, logic is a fundamental ideal in society—but could our efforts be ineffective against the spread of modern misinformation? Opinion writer Charlie Warzel raises this question in his recent New York Times article, “Don’t Go Down the Rabbit Hole.” (https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/18/opinion/fake-news-media-attention.html?referringSource=articleShare) Critical thinking was introduced as an educational goal in 1910 by American philosopher John Dewey. The process “originates with the sensing of a problem. It is a quality of thought operating in an effort to solve the problem and to reach a tentative conclusion which is supported by all available data” (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, https://plato.stanford. edu/entries/critical-thinking/history.html). Schools that implemented critical thinking lessons noticed improved test scores among students. By the 1970s, departments of education across the U.S. were adopting thinking objectives into their curricXOXPV &KLOGUHQ ZHUH QRZ SXUSRVLYHO\ WDXJKW WR UHÁHFW DQDO\]H collect information, explore opposing points of view, identify bias, determine importance, reach a conclusion, and communicate the results or opinion. Today, this model is integrated into the fabric of our everyday lives and serves as the basis for credibility. Often spreading faster than the truth, social media is riddled with misinformation. (https://science.sciencemag.org/content/359/6380/1146). The Church of St. Francis Xavier in Manhattan is no stranger to the backlash of misinformation. In his February 28th bulletin letter (https://www.thebostonpilot.com/bcd/Bulletins/210228/30737_210228.pdf), Fr. Joe wrote about the racial justice initiatives of our Jesuit neighbors in New York, including the introduction of a Pledge for Racial Justice following Communion. A local journalist falsely accused SFX of replacing the Creed with the pledge. This was then picked up by Fox News so that from across the country the parish received an onslaught of angry emails, phone calls, and letters. The folks whose adverse reactions were prompted by deception did not bother to vet the source or fact check the story. Engaging deeply with all the various media’s tenacious rhetoric can lead to confusion—precisely the goal of misinformation. He warns that the attention we give to conspiracy theorists and trolls in an attempt to debunk myths leaves us oftentimes susceptible to false news itself. This is not to say we are unintelligent, rather it speaks to the power. 2/Fourth Sunday of Lent. (Continued on page 3). New York Times, "Don't Go Down the Rabbit Hole". (9) Outreach Ministries TIMOR-LESTE The changing weather patterns in Timor-Leste make it difficult to grow enough food. They depend on rice as a main part of their meals. Hunger and malnutrition are big problems. More than one-third of people don’t have reliable access to enough nutritious food. CRS is training families to grow gardens with different vegetables and other varities of foods that are rich in nutrients. The gardens are built to withstand droughts and flooding. The families add the crops they grow to their daily rice staple, providing more nourishing meals that help their children stay healthy. Eliza and her husband Paulino are one such family that started their own home garden. They also started raising chickens, which adds protein to their meals and provides income from selling the eggs. Eliza wants her children to be healthy and says, “I know the vegetables provide essential vitamins for them.” Our parish Community Giving Page is set up on the CRS Rice Bowl website. You can make your donation any time or even in installments: https://bit.ly/2PjRfEf This week’s video: https://www.crsricebowl.org/stories-of-hope/week-4 Eliza and Paulino's family.
